Chapter 6 - The Midnight Summons

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft, mechanical hum, revealing the tall, imposing figure of Julian Vance standing in the foyer. He wore a dark wool overcoat over his signature burgundy suit, his short brown hair slightly tousled by the night wind. He didn't step inside immediately; he simply stood on the threshold, surveying the wreckage of the Sterling household with cold, clinical detachment.

Arthur scrambled to his feet, knocking his scotch glass onto the carpet, though he didn't care. "Julian. You’re... you’re here."

"Put your coat on, Arthur," Julian said, his voice echoing in the quiet penthouse. "The federal investigators moved the timeline up. They’re executing the search warrants at your primary warehouses right now."

Chloe clutched the lapels of her glittering pink dress, her breath catching in her throat. "Please, Julian. Can’t you talk to them? Can’t you make a phone call? We’ll give up everything—the penthouse, the cars, the jewelry. Just keep us out of prison."

Julian stepped past them, walking toward the grand window to look out at the skyline. He didn't look at Chloe with anger anymore; his expression was far worse—it was absolute indifference.

"Prison isn't my decision to make, Chloe. That belongs to the legal system," Julian said calmly. "My wife, however, asked me to deliver a message before the authorities arrive."

Arthur wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Elena? What... what does she want?"

Julian turned around, pulling a small, cream-colored envelope from his overcoat pocket. He tossed it onto the coffee table, right where the spilled scotch was soaking into the fabric.

"She wants to offer you a choice," Julian replied.

Chloe lunged forward, snatching the envelope off the table and tearing it open with frantic fingers. Inside was a single sheet of paper covered in Elena’s precise, elegant handwriting. She read the lines aloud, her voice trembling violently.

"'Arthur Sterling and Chloe Sterling,'" she read, tears blurring her vision. "'You have twenty-four hours to liquidate your remaining personal assets and publicly surrender your controlling shares in Sterling Enterprises. In exchange, the foundation will not pursue the maximum federal penalties for corporate fraud.'"

Arthur stared at his daughter, his chest heaving as he processed the terms of their surrender. It meant complete and total annihilation of their empire.

"We’ll be left with nothing," Arthur whispered, a tear finally cutting a clean path down his dusty cheek. "We’ll be homeless."

Julian buttoned his overcoat, turning back toward the elevator. "You had everything, Arthur, and you used it to belittle people who built their lives on honesty. You aren't being left with nothing. You're simply being left with the truth."

As the elevator doors closed, Chloe looked down at the letter in her hands, realizing they had nowhere left to run.
