Chapter 11 - The Ambush at the Alley

Chloe dropped the manila folder and hurried past Marcus Vance toward the frosted glass of the alley window. Pushing the curtain aside, she peered out into the dim light of the street. A dozen reporters with flashing cameras and boom microphones had swarmed the back entrance of the community kitchen, blocking the exit entirely.

"How did they find me?" Chloe whispered, a cold wave of panic washing over her. She had intentionally erased all traces of her old social media presence, hiding away in this industrial neighborhood.

Marcus stepped up beside her, his expression darkening as he looked out at the media circus. "You didn't leak your location, Chloe. Someone else did."

"Who?" Chloe demanded, turning to face him.

"Your old circle," Marcus said flatly. "Specifically, Victoria Thorne and the remaining members of your former clique. They’ve been circulating rumors online that the disgraced heiress is hiding out in a soup kitchen, trying to play the martyr for public sympathy."

Chloe felt a knot twist tightly in her stomach. The humiliation she had fought so hard to rise above was threatening to drag her right back down into the dirt. If the press cornered her here, her new job—her entire fragile fresh start—would be shredded to pieces before it even began.

"I can't go out there," Chloe said, her voice shaking as she backed away from the door. "They'll rip me apart. They’ll take pictures of me in this apron, scrubbing floors, and turn it into a joke."

Marcus watched her closely, testing her resolve. "Running won't work, Chloe. The front entrance is already compromised too. If you hide in the back, they’ll camp out until morning. You either face them on your terms, or you let them define your story all over again."

Chloe closed her eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. She thought of her father sick upstate. She thought of the months of grueling kitchen work that had taught her what real dignity looked like. She didn't need designer clothes or sparkling dresses to protect her anymore.

"Give me the pen," Chloe said quietly.

Marcus raised an eyebrow, surprised. "What?"

"The contract," Chloe said, opening her eyes with sudden, fierce determination. "I’m signing the field coordinator job offer right now. If I’m going to face the press, I’m going to do it as a representative of the Vance Foundation, not as a cowering ex-socialite."

Marcus smiled—a genuine, respectful smile that completely transformed his stern face. He handed her the heavy steel pen without a word.

Chloe signed her name at the bottom of the page in bold, steady strokes. Then, she tied her apron tighter, squared her shoulders, and walked straight toward the heavy steel back door, gripping the handle with both hands.
