Chapter 5 - The Confession at Dawn

The city lights outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling penthouse cast long, bleeding shadows across the ruined living room. Arthur sat slumped on the velvet sofa, a glass of half-finished scotch resting forgotten on the coffee table. Chloe stood by the window, staring blankly at her own reflection in the glass, still wearing the crumpled sparkling pink dress from the day before. The party was over. The accounts were frozen. The police were scheduled to arrive at nine in the morning.

"You should have kept your mouth shut," Arthur muttered, his voice dead and hollow. "If you hadn't tried to humiliate that woman on the street, none of this would have surfaced for at least another six months. We could have transferred the assets."

Chloe whipped around, her eyes flashing with sudden, desperate fury. "Me? You’re blaming me for your illegal offshore accounts? I didn't steal millions from the development fund, Dad! You did that!"

"I did it to keep this family afloat!" Arthur yelled, slamming his hand against the glass table, causing the crystal glass to rattle. "To pay for your clothes, your cars, your endless parties! You wanted to live like royalty while contributing nothing to the world except cruelty!"

The brutal truth hung in the air between them, sharp and suffocating. Chloe stepped back, her lower lip trembling as the full weight of her shallow existence crashed down on her shoulders. She had spent her entire life believing that wealth and designer labels made her superior to everyone else. Now, stripped of her credit cards and social status, she realized she was entirely hollow.

"What are we going to do?" Chloe whispered, the defiance finally draining out of her, leaving only a broken, terrified girl.

Arthur stared down at his empty hands, looking older than time itself. "There’s nothing left to do. Elena holds all the cards. She didn't just ruin us out of spite; she exposed us because she operates on a completely different moral plane than we do."

Chloe walked slowly to the couch, sinking down beside her father. For the first time in her life, she felt the biting chill of genuine remorse. She thought back to the woman in the green dress standing outside the revolving door—calm, composed, and untouchable.

"Do you think she’ll ever forgive us?" Chloe asked quietly.

Arthur let out a dry, mirthless chuckle. "People like Elena don't deal in forgiveness, Chloe. They deal in justice."

Suddenly, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse, signaling an arrival at an ungodly hour of the morning. Both father and daughter froze, staring in terror at the sliding metal doors as they slowly began to part.
