Chapter 4 - The Unexpected Visitor

Elena Vance walked into the boardroom with the quiet, effortless grace of a monarch entering a conquered province. She had shed the beige designer handbag, carrying only a slim leather portfolio under her arm. Her dark green sheath dress seemed to absorb the harsh fluorescent light of the room, casting an aura of severe, uncompromising authority. Behind her walked Marcus Vance, Julian’s older brother and the notoriously ruthless chief legal counsel for the family empire.
Arthur Sterling forced a tight, overly polite smile, stepping forward with his hand extended. "Elena. What an unexpected, wonderful surprise. Please, sit down. We were just discussing how to clear up this unfortunate misunderstanding."
Elena did not take his hand. She simply looked down at it until Arthur awkwardly withdrew it, sliding it back into his pocket with a dry swallow.
"Sit down, Arthur," Elena said, her voice smooth, calm, and entirely chilling.
Chloe shrunk back into her chair in the corner, pulling the hem of her glittering pink mini dress down over her knees in a futile attempt to make herself invisible.
Marcus Vance pulled out a chair for Elena, then remained standing behind her like a sentinel. He dropped a thick stack of manila folders onto the polished mahogany table with a heavy thud.
"Let’s skip the pleasantries, Arthur," Marcus said, his tone biting. "We aren't here to negotiate a misunderstanding. We are here to review the preliminary findings of the financial forensic audit your daughter’s behavior inadvertently triggered."
Arthur’s face turned from crimson to a ghostly, sickly pallor. He gripped the edge of the table. "An audit? But the routine check isn't scheduled until next quarter. You can't just audit a publicly traded subsidiary without cause."
Elena opened her slim leather portfolio, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table toward Arthur. "We didn't need a scheduled check, Arthur. The moment Julian’s security team ran a preliminary background sweep after the incident at the hotel, our compliance software flagged three shell companies registered under your nephew's name, funneling development funds directly into offshore accounts."
Chloe gasped loudly, staring at her father in sheer disbelief. "Dad? What are they talking about?"
Arthur didn't look at his daughter. His eyes were glued to the document, his hands trembling violently as he realized the game was up. The insult at the hotel had been the spark, but the rot underneath had been there all along.

"You're ruined, Arthur," Elena said softly, closing her portfolio. "And your daughter’s arrogance just accelerated the timeline."
