Chapter 1 - The Public Deception

The sharp crack of Julian Vance’s hand striking Chloe Sterling’s cheek echoed off the limestone facade of the grand hotel, silencing the buzzing street corner. Chloe’s sparkling pink mini dress caught the afternoon light, but her face burned white where the blow had landed. She stood frozen, her jaw slack, her sparkling drop earrings swinging wildly from the sudden motion.

Julian didn't look at her. His intense gaze remained locked on the woman standing by the revolving door.

"Do you know who this woman is?" Julian’s voice cut through the heavy silence, low and dangerous.

Chloe blinked back a tear of humiliation, her voice trembling as she tried to regain her footing. "Julian, honey, what are you doing? Everyone is looking at us. She’s just a nobody. Look at her bag. It’s practically last season."

Elena Vance remained entirely still. The dark green sheath dress she wore hugged her frame with quiet elegance, and her long dark hair in a low ponytail accentuated the sharp, aristocratic line of her jaw. She clutched her beige designer handbag like a shield, her expression neutral, devoid of the petty triumph Chloe expected.

"She is my wife," Julian said, his words dropping like lead weights onto the marble pavement.

Gasps rippled through Chloe’s entourage of socialite friends. Whispers erupted instantly.

Chloe let out a nervous, breathless laugh, waving a manicured hand dismissively. "Your wife? Julian, stop joking around. Your wife is supposed to be in Zurich closing that massive venture capital acquisition. This... this is just some random girl standing outside."

Julian stepped closer to Chloe, his burgundy three-piece suit radiating pure authority. "My wife handles our family’s philanthropic trust, Chloe. And you just insulted the primary shareholder of the very real estate development firm funding your father’s failing company."

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. The color drained completely from her face. She looked from Julian’s cold, unblinking eyes over to Elena, whose expression remained an unreadable mask.

"Elena," Chloe stammered, her voice suddenly high and desperate. "Elena, I didn't know. We were just joking. It was harmless banter."

Elena took one slow, deliberate step forward, her dark eyes piercing straight through Chloe’s carefully constructed facade.

"Was it harmless, Chloe?" Elena asked quietly. "Or were you just displaying the exact lack of character my husband’s board has been trying to warn us about?"

Before Chloe could fumble for another excuse, Julian reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a heavy gold-embossed card, and dropped it right at Chloe’s sparkling shoes.

"Your father’s line of credit is officially revoked as of this second," Julian announced coldly.

Chloe stared down at the card on the pavement, realizing her entire social standing had just evaporated in less than ten seconds.
