Chapter 2 - The Fall of Credit

The silence that followed Julian’s declaration felt heavier than the marble steps of the hotel. Chloe stared down at the gold-embossed corporate card resting on the concrete, her manicured fingers twitching with helpless panic. The glittering pink mini dress that had made her feel invincible moments ago now felt like a cheap costume. Her friends had already begun to slowly back away, dissolving into the afternoon foot traffic to distance themselves from the unfolding disaster.
"Julian, please," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as she forced herself to look up from the pavement. "You can't do this over a simple misunderstanding. My dad has projects running with your firm. Millions are tied up in those accounts."
Julian adjusted the cuffs of his dark burgundy suit, his expression completely devoid of mercy. "My father taught me long ago that a company’s integrity is reflected in the behavior of those it associates with. If you treat strangers with such vicious contempt in public, I shudder to think how your family treats our contractors behind closed doors. The audit begins Monday morning."
Elena shifted the beige designer handbag to her other hand, watching the scene unfold with quiet detachment. She didn't gloat. She didn't smile. She simply observed the terrifying speed with which a privileged life built on shallow foundations could collapse.
"You planned this," Chloe hissed, her facade finally cracking entirely as genuine rage replaced fear. She pointed a trembling finger at Elena. "You stood there and said nothing just to trap us. You wanted to humiliate me."
Elena tilted her head slightly, her dark green sheath dress rustling as she took another calm step toward them. "I didn't say a single word, Chloe. You provided all the dialogue necessary to condemn yourself. Character isn't what you show when the cameras are flashing; it’s what leaks out when you think nobody important is watching."
Julian offered his arm to Elena, a silent gesture of solidarity and absolute partnership that made Chloe’s stomach churn. Without sparing another glance at the woman crumpled in her own vanity, Julian guided his wife toward the waiting vintage town car parked at the curb.
Chloe watched them go, her chest heaving with humiliation and impotent fury. She reached down, snatched the corporate card from the ground, and whipped out her smartphone with trembling fingers, dialing her father’s private line.
The phone rang three times before a gruff, exhausted voice answered on the other end. "Chloe, I’m in the middle of a board meeting. Make it quick."
"Dad," Chloe choked out, tears finally spilling over her carefully applied makeup. "We're ruined. Julian Vance just cut off our funding."

On the other end of the line, there was a terrifying, dead silence before her father whispered, "What did you just say?"
