Chapter 3 - The Family Meeting

The mahogany conference room of Sterling Enterprises smelled of old money and impending doom. Arthur Sterling paced the length of the polished table, his silk tie askew, his face flushed with a dangerous shade of crimson. Across the room, Chloe sat in her still-sparkling pink dress, refusing to change, as if clinging to the outfit would somehow preserve her dignity.
"Are you completely out of your mind?" Arthur roared, slamming his fist onto the wood. "Vance Capital isn't just a partner; they are the sole reason our commercial portfolio hasn't been liquidated by the banks! And you decided to mock his wife over a handbag?"
"I didn't know it was her!" Chloe sobbed, her mascara running down her cheeks. "She looked like she didn't belong there! She was wearing a basic green dress and carrying some boring beige purse. How was I supposed to know she’s the untouchable Elena Vance?"
"By having the basic human decency not to judge people based on their clothes!" Arthur shouted, collapsing into his leather executive chair with a heavy sigh of defeat. He rubbed his temples, looking twenty years older than he had that morning. "The emergency board meeting is in ten minutes. The directors are already whispering about pulling their shares. If we can't appease Julian and Elena, we lose everything—the penthouse, the cars, the accounts."
Chloe sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. "Can’t we just apologize? Send them flowers? Sue them for breach of contract?"
Arthur let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Sue them? Chloe, their legal team wrote the precedents our lawyers use in court every day. Our only hope is a direct audience with Elena herself. She runs the foundation that manages their philanthropic grants. If she recommends leniency, Julian might reconsider the audit."
The heavy oak doors of the conference room swung open smoothly, interrupting their frantic debate.
A junior associate stepped inside, pale and trembling slightly. "Mr. Sterling, your 3:00 PM appointment has arrived. But... it’s not who you were expecting."
Arthur stood up straight, smoothing his suit jacket in a desperate attempt to look composed. "Who is it?"
May you like
"It’s Mrs. Elena Vance," the associate whispered. "And she’s brought the board’s chief legal investigator with her."
