Chapter 7

The police led Julian away through the service doors, his head held down as the flashing red lights outside painted his tuxedo in crimson strokes. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them, sealing the immediate physical threat but leaving behind a heavy psychological wreckage. Detective Miller remained behind, taking statements from Chloe, Thomas, and the venue manager. Chloe recounted how she had stumbled upon the hacked terminal in the security office while investigating a recurring Wi-Fi glitch for the catering staff, stumbling blindly into a digital rabbit hole of surveillance footage.

"You saved her life, young lady," Detective Miller said, offering Chloe an approving, solemn nod. "If that cake had been cut and served to the bridal party, the coroner wouldn't have found the poison until it was far too late. The compound used is fast-acting, untraceable in standard post-mortems unless specifically screened for." Chloe simply nodded, clutching her apron tightly around her waist, still visibly shaken by the gravity of what she had accidentally uncovered. Her quick thinking had averted a tragedy that would have made national headlines.

Thomas sat down heavily in the chair Julian had just vacated, burying his face in his hands. The realization that his own brother was a sociopath capable of such calculated slaughter was breaking him apart from the inside. "He called me last month," Thomas confessed, his voice muffled by his palms. "Asked me about estate law. Said he was worried about Olivia’s financial security if anything happened to her. I thought... God help me, I thought he was just being responsible. I praised him for looking out for her future."

Olivia listened from her seat, a cold numbness spreading through her limbs. The betrayal was multi-layered, branching out into every corner of the life she thought she shared with Julian. Every anniversary dinner, every sweet text message, every shared laugh over the past two years was now retroactively poisoned, revealed as a manipulative performance by a man who viewed her solely as an investment portfolio waiting to be cashed out. She stood up slowly, leaning on Sarah for physical support, knowing that the hardest part of her journey was only just beginning.
