Chapter 4

Before Julian could muster a defense or bolt toward the exit, the sharp crackle of a two-way radio broke the stillness of the pavilion. Two uniformed private security officers, drawn by the commotion and the urgent tone of Chloe’s warnings, pushed their way through the paralyzed crowd. Their heavy footsteps echoed sharply against the marble flooring. They moved with professional efficiency, instinctively sizing up the geometry of the room, the proximity of the exits, and the obvious distress of the bride.
Thomas raised a hand, his voice steady despite the profound trembling in his fingers. "Don't let him move," Thomas instructed the guards, pointing a trembling finger directly at his brother. "Hold him right where he is." Julian made a half-hearted attempt to brush past the security personnel, but the larger of the two guards stepped squarely into his path, placing a firm, unyielding hand against Julian’s chest. The physical barrier made the reality of his confinement undeniable. Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the tall windows overlooking the city street below, calculating impossible odds of escape.
Olivia had collapsed slightly into the arms of her maid of honor, Sarah, who was whispering gentle, frantic reassurances while glaring daggers at the groom. The beautiful updo of blonde hair was beginning to come undone, a few stray locks framing Olivia’s tear-streaked face. She could not take her eyes off Julian. The man who had held her hand through months of stressful planning, who had whispered sweet promises under the moonlight, was a stranger. Worse than a stranger—he was an executioner who had carefully orchestrated her demise under the guise of eternal devotion.

The manager immediately recognized the gravity of the situation, pulling out his own device to record the scene and preserve the chain of evidence. "Nobody touch that cake," the manager commanded, gesturing to the terrified catering staff lingering near the kitchen doors. "Clear the room. Now. I want every guest ushered into the grand lounge immediately, and I want the local police notified of an active crime scene." The dismantling of the reception had begun.
