Chapter 13

The trial finally reached its climax in the dead of winter, exactly one year after the aborted wedding at the Starlight Pavilion. The courtroom was packed to capacity, the public gallery filled with journalists, onlookers, and several of the investors Julian had defrauded. Olivia took the stand as the prosecution's star witness, recounting the events of that fateful night with unwavering composure. She didn't look at Julian once during her testimony, refusing to grant him the satisfaction of her fear or her anger. Her voice rang clear and steady throughout the wood-paneled room, detailing the lies, the betrayal, and the miraculous intervention that saved her life.
When the defense cross-examined her, trying to poke holes in her character and suggest a marital dispute rather than an attempted assassination, Olivia met every question with calm, unassailable facts. The surveillance footage, crystal clear and damning, was played for the jury a final time on the courtroom monitors. Julian sat at the defense table, his head bowed, his once-impeccable veneer completely shattered. The illusion of charm had burned away, leaving only a pathetic, small-minded criminal facing the inevitable consequences of his own hubris.
After three days of intense deliberation, the jury returned with their verdict. The foreman stood up, his voice echoing in the tense silence of the room. On the first count of attempted premeditated murder, the verdict was guilty. On the second count of wire fraud, guilty. On all twelve subsequent charges of forgery, embezzlement, and conspiracy, guilty across the board. Judge Harrison didn't hesitate before handing down the sentence, condemning Julian Vance to thirty-five years in federal and state prison without the possibility of parole.

As the bailiffs led Julian away for the final time, the heavy steel doors clanged shut behind him with a definitive, echoing finality. Olivia sat back in her seat, closing her eyes for a brief moment as a profound wave of peace washed over her. The ghost of her past had been safely locked away in a concrete box where it could never hurt her or anyone else ever again. The trial was over, the verdict delivered, and the terrifying chapter of her life was officially closed.
