Chapter 10

Two weeks later, the municipal courthouse downtown was a circus of flashing camera bulbs and aggressive reporters shouting questions as Olivia walked up the granite steps, flanked by her father and Thomas. Julian’s arraignment had drawn massive media attention; the story of the groom attempting to poison his bride at the altar had captured the public imagination, embodying every modern fear of intimacy and deception. Olivia kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, wearing a simple navy blue suit that projected quiet dignity rather than victimhood.

Inside the courtroom, the air was cool and smelled of old paper and polished wood. Julian was led in through a side door, wearing an orange jumpsuit instead of his tailored black tuxedo. He looked thinner, his hair slightly disheveled, but as his eyes scanned the gallery and locked onto Olivia, there was no remorse to be found—only a cold, calculating resentment. He didn't look like a repentant sinner; he looked like a cornered animal plotting its next move, even from behind the bars of a cage.

The proceedings moved with cold, mechanical efficiency. The prosecutor laid out the preliminary charges, detailing the poisoned vial recovered from the loading dock, the forensic confirmation of a lethal synthetic neurotoxin, and the staggering mountain of hidden debt that provided the motive. When the judge asked Julian how he pleaded, his defense attorney stood up and entered a formal plea of not guilty, citing procedural technicalities and claiming the surveillance footage was circumstantial. Julian stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched in defiant silence.

When Olivia’s eyes met his across the courtroom, she didn't flinch. She didn't cry. The tears of the wedding night had been spent, replaced by a cold, unyielding strength. She realized then that Julian had wanted to destroy her, to reduce her to a statistic on a coroner's table for a quick payout. By surviving, by sitting in this courtroom as an active witness to his downfall, she had already defeated him. The trial would be long and grueling, but the outcome was no longer in doubt; the truth had already broken into the light.
