Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom cast a million splintered points of light across the polished white marble floor, illuminating the joyous faces of the hundred guests gathered at the Starlight Pavilion. Olivia stood beside Julian, her blonde hair meticulously gathered into an elegant updo that caught the warm glow of the overhead lights. She smoothed the intricate lace of her pristine white wedding dress, her heart swelling with a deep, abiding sense of peace and anticipation. Julian, looking sharp and undeniably handsome in his tailored black tuxedo, offered her a reassuring smile, his fingers gently brushing against hers as they prepared to cut the magnificent five-tier wedding cake. The air smelled faintly of buttercream, expensive champagne, and the sweet perfume of white roses adorning every table.
Yet, a sharp disturbance cut through the ambient murmur of polite conversation and soft string quartet music. The heavy oak service doors burst open with a suddenness that made several guests flinch. Chloe, the young waitress with her chestnut hair tied neatly back in a practical bun, stumbled into the brightly lit room. Her bright orange polo shirt and white service apron seemed violently out of place amid the black-tie elegance of the reception. More alarming, however, was the expression etched onto her face. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths, and her eyes were wide, fixed entirely on the tiered confection standing proudly beside the bride and groom.
Only moments earlier, back in the dim quiet of the catering preparation room, Chloe had unlocked a secure delivery box meant for the venue’s manager. Inside lay an old smartphone, its cracked screen abruptly illuminating a live security feed from the rear loading dock. The video clearly showed Julian standing over a separate, unmarked box, withdrawing a small amber vial and tipping a clear, viscous liquid directly onto a secondary pastry base destined for the main dessert table. A single silver spoon clattered onto the cold tile in the footage, dropped in haste. The cold reality struck Chloe with the force of a physical blow. She gasped, her voice trembling in the empty prep room as she whispered to the quiet walls, "Oh my god."

Now, standing mere feet from the unsuspecting couple, Chloe felt her pulse roaring in her ears. Julian’s demeanor shifted instantaneously, the warm smile freezing on his lips as his eyes locked onto the smartphone clutched tightly in the waitress’s trembling hand. The screen still displayed the incriminating image, casting an eerie blue glow against Chloe’s pale skin. The silence in the immediate vicinity of the cake table grew heavy, suffocating, and absolute, replacing the festive cheer with a sudden, icy dread that froze the celebration in its tracks.
