Chapter 2

Time seemed to fracture into jagged, agonizing shards as Chloe pushed past the boundary separating the service staff from the guests. The bright white tiles beneath her worn sneakers offered no traction against the sudden surge of adrenaline flooding her veins. She raised her smartphone higher, the digital display glowing like a beacon of terrible truth in the opulent room. Julian’s face lost all its color, the sophisticated charm he projected to the world evaporating to reveal a cornered, desperate panic underneath. He took a half-step forward, his hand instinctively moving toward the pocket of his tuxedo trousers as if searching for an escape that simply did not exist.

"Olivia, stop! Don't touch that cake!" Chloe’s voice cut through the murmurs of the crowd, sharp and uncompromising. The acoustic resonance of the vaulted ceiling carried her warning to every corner of the pavilion, causing the string quartet to falter mid-note. Several guests turned their heads in confusion, wondering what amateur mistake a catering employee could possibly be making to cause such a public scene. But Olivia did not move to touch the frosting; instead, her hand froze inches from the silver cake knife, her blue eyes darting from Chloe’s terrified face to Julian’s rapidly deteriorating composure.

Julian swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he tried to mask his terror behind a mask of righteous indignation. He forced a strained, brittle laugh that sounded entirely hollow in the tense air. "What on earth is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his voice pitching slightly higher than normal. "Are you out of your mind? You’re ruining our wedding over a petty mistake or a poorly timed prank. Security, someone please remove this woman immediately before she causes a complete scene." He gestured frantically toward the rear exit, hoping to marshal venue staff before the narrative slipped entirely out of his hands.

Chloe refused to retreat. She stood her ground, her fingers white-knuckled around the plastic casing of the phone. "She's insane," Chloe said, her voice dropping an octave as she looked past Julian to address a looming, middle-aged man in a matching tuxedo who had stepped up behind the groom—Julian’s older brother and best man, Thomas. "Get security. He poured something into this tier. I saw the footage from the loading dock cameras. It's poison, Thomas. Your brother is trying to poison his own bride." The accusation hung in the air like smoke, dense and choking, transforming the fairytale wedding into a chilling scene of betrayal and horror.
