Chapter 3

The accusation settled over the Starlight Pavilion like a sudden winter frost. Thomas froze, his hand hovering near Julian’s shoulder, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and dawning horror. He looked from Chloe’s dead-serious expression to his brother’s averted, sweating face. The silence that followed was absolute, heavier than any physical burden. Guests nearby leaned away from the cake table as if the tiered masterpiece were suddenly wired with explosives. The festive atmosphere evaporated entirely, replaced by a suffocating tension that made breathing difficult.
Olivia remained motionless, her hand still resting near the silver knife. The pristine lace of her wedding dress seemed to weigh a thousand pounds. She turned her head slowly, looking at the man she had promised to love and honor for the rest of her life. Julian was no longer looking at the crowd; his eyes were fixed on the floor, his jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle jumped near his temple. The carefully constructed facade of their perfect romance was crumbling away, exposing a foundation built on deceit, malice, and secrets too dark to comprehend.
"Julian?" Olivia’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it cut through the oppressive quiet more effectively than a shout. It was a sound stripped of all anger, leaving only a hollow, echoing grief. "Tell me she's lying. Look at me and tell me she's out of her mind." Her eyes welled with tears, the salt stinging her skin as they spilled over, running in hot, unchecked tracks down her pale cheeks. The devastation in her gaze was absolute, a silent plea for a reality that no longer existed.

Julian opened his mouth, but no words came out. His silence was louder than any denial could ever be. He swallowed hard, his shoulders slumping beneath the expensive wool of his tuxedo jacket. Thomas took a slow, deliberate step back from his brother, as if realizing for the first time the true nature of the man he had grown up with. "How could you?" Olivia whispered softly, the words breaking apart on a sob that shook her entire frame. She pulled her hands back from the table as if the very air surrounding Julian had become toxic, retreating into the space between her bridesmaids who stood paralyzed in shock.
