Chapter 5 - A Dangerous Game

The shattered glass crunched beneath Julian’s heavy boots as he sidestepped the incoming threat with the fluid grace of a trained fighter. The intruder, dressed in tactical black gear and wearing a reinforced balaclava, fired a silenced shot that embedded itself deeply into the wooden headboard of the bed with a sharp thud. Julian didn't hesitate; he closed the distance in a fraction of a second, driving a brutal elbow straight into the assailant's chest, knocking the weapon clattering to the floor.

A brief, violent struggle ensued in the cramped quarters of the servant's room. The intruder swung a heavy fist, clipping Julian’s jaw and sending a dull ache through his stubble-covered face, but Julian retaliated by sweeping the operative's legs out from under them. The masked figure crashed hard onto the floorboards, the breath rushing out of their lungs in a sharp gasp.

Julian pinned the operative down with a knee to the chest, his hands instantly reaching up to rip the balaclava away.

The mask came off, revealing the sweat-slicked face of a young man Julian recognized instantly—Marcus, one of the top enforcers working directly under the Vance syndicate.

"Where is she?" Julian demanded, pressing his forearm against Marcus’s windpipe with merciless pressure. "Where did Clara take the ledger?"

Marcus choked for air, a defiant grin cutting across his bruised lips. "You... you think you've secured the estate, Julian? Clara was just the decoy. The real extraction happened ten minutes ago while you were busy playing detective in your study."

Julian’s blood ran cold. He released his grip on Marcus’s throat slightly, his mind racing through the security protocols of the mansion. The main vault wasn't in the basement; it was hidden behind the vintage mirror in the grand hallway where this entire nightmare had begun.

"What did she take?" Julian growled, leaning closer.

Marcus laughed, coughing up a small spray of blood onto the pristine floor. "Everything. The offshore codes, the shipping routes, and the proof that your precious Elena sold out your syndicate to my boss six months ago."

Julian froze, the words hanging in the air like a death sentence. He looked down at the operative, then toward the open bedroom door that led back into the long, luxurious hallway. Elena hadn't just suspected Clara; she had been working with her all along, orchestrating a brilliant double-cross to frame the maid and escape with the syndicate's fortune under his very nose.

Before Julian could process the full weight of the betrayal, a massive explosion shook the foundation of the east wing, plunging the hallway into sudden, pitch-black darkness.
