Chapter 4 - The Empty Room

The east wing of the estate was notoriously drafty, the floorboards groaning underfoot as Julian hurried toward Clara’s quarters. The crystal chandeliers gave way to flickering wall sconces that cast long, distorted shadows against the white paneled walls. He reached the mahogany door at the end of the hall, the brass handle gleaming in the dim light. It was locked, exactly as he had instructed.

"Clara," Julian called out, keeping his voice low but firm. "Open the door. We need to talk."

There was no answer. Only the hollow echo of his own voice bouncing off the high ceilings.

Julian gripped the handle and twisted it hard. To his surprise, the lock gave way with a soft click; she hadn't thrown the deadbolt after all. He pushed the door open and stepped into the small, modestly furnished bedroom. The window was wide open, letting in a gust of frigid night air that billowed the white lace curtains.

The room was completely empty.

Julian’s gaze swept the space with practiced precision. The bed was made, untouched. The small wooden dresser held a neatly folded stack of spare maid uniforms. But on the bedside table sat a single, out-of-place object: an expensive, gold-encrusted fountain pen that did not belong to any member of the household staff.

Julian stepped forward and picked the pen up, examining the intricate engraving along the cap. It was embossed with the family crest of the Vance syndicate—his family’s fiercest rival in the city's underground hierarchy. The cold knot in his stomach tightened into a suffocating mass. Elena had been right. Clara wasn't a runaway maid seeking shelter; she was a message.

Suddenly, a soft metallic click echoed from the far corner of the room. Julian spun around, his instincts screaming danger as a red laser dot flickered across the wall, coming to rest squarely against the center of his chest.

Before he could throw himself to the floor, the window shattered inward as a heavily armed intruder dropped silently into the room, leveling a suppressed firearm directly at him.
