Chapter 11 - Darkness and Deception

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness was accompanied by the heavy, metallic screech of the warehouse's main roll-up security doors being wrenched open from the outside. A blinding wall of high-beam headlights flooded the cavernous space, silhouetting several heavily armed figures standing in the entrance.
"Federal backup! Drop your weapons!" a deep voice shouted from the blinding glare, though the cadence didn't match standard tactical protocol.
Julian didn't hesitate. Leveraging his extensive combat training, he dropped low to the concrete floor and rolled beneath the metal interrogation table just as a volley of automatic gunfire chewed through the air above him. Sparks rained down like fireworks as bullets ricocheted off the concrete pillars and the rusted steel walls.
Across the room, the sound of shouting and frantic scuffling erupted. Sarah Miller had taken cover behind a large concrete support column, her service pistol drawn as she returned fire toward the shadowy figures advancing through the headlights.
"Agent Miller!" Julian called out over the deafening roar of gunfire, crawling rapidly toward her position. "Those aren't your backup units! That’s Elena’s personal extraction team!"
Sarah fired two precise shots into the darkness, hearing a heavy thud as one of the attackers dropped. She didn't lower her weapon as Julian reached her side, pressing his back against the opposite side of the concrete pillar.
"How do you know that?" Sarah demanded, her breathing heavy and erratic.
"Because standard federal units use suppressed rounds and coordinate verbally," Julian replied, wiping a streak of sweat and soot from his stubble-lined cheek. "Those men are using unsuppressed assault rifles with military-grade armor-piercing rounds. They aren't here to rescue you or arrest me—they’re here to wipe out every witness who knows what was on those drives."
Sarah’s jaw clenched. She realized he was right. The agency had been compromised from the very top, exactly as Julian had warned just moments before the lights went out.
"If we stay here, we're dead," Sarah said, pressing a concealed emergency beacon on her tactical vest. "My encrypted distress signal went out the second the power dropped. If we can hold out for two minutes, true tactical backup will breach the perimeter."
Julian shook his head, his dark eyes scanning the chaotic shadows of the warehouse. "Two minutes is a lifetime, Miller. And Elena isn't leaving loose ends."

Suddenly, a heavy combat boot slammed down on the concrete just feet away from their pillar, and the barrel of an assault rifle swung around the corner, aimed directly at Sarah's head.
