Chapter 12 - The Turning Point

Julian moved with terrifying speed. Before the gunman could squeeze the trigger, Julian surged upward from his crouch, grabbing the barrel of the assault rifle and wrenching it upward. The weapon discharged wildly, sending a burst of bullets straight into the corrugated metal roof. With a sharp twist of his calloused hands, Julian disarmed the attacker, driving a brutal knee straight into the man's chest and sending him crashing hard onto the concrete.
Sarah didn't waste a second; she stepped out from behind the pillar and fired two rapid shots into the legs of a second advancing operative, neutralizing the threat before he could raise his weapon.
The gunfire in the warehouse began to taper off as the remaining attackers realized the element of surprise had been lost. Through the blinding wall of headlights at the main entrance, the silhouette of a sleek black sports car roared into the building, its engine screaming as it drifted in a wide arc across the concrete floor.
Behind the wheel sat Elena. She wore her tactical black jumpsuit, her blonde hair whipping around her face as she spun the car around, bringing the passenger side door directly in front of where Julian and Sarah stood.
The car window rolled down smoothly, revealing Elena’s calm, resolute expression. She wasn't holding a weapon; instead, she held up a small, secure hardware drive—the true master archive.
"Get in, Julian," Elena called out, her voice cutting clearly through the lingering smoke of the warehouse. "Or stay here and go down with a sinking ship."
Julian stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his hand still gripping the seized assault rifle. He looked from Elena in the car to Sarah Miller, who was currently leveling her service pistol directly at the windshield of the vehicle.
"If you let her go, Vance, you're an accessory to treason for the rest of your life," Sarah warned, her finger resting heavily on the trigger. "Shoot the tires or I take the shot."
Julian looked down at Sarah, then back at Elena, whose eyes held a strange, complicated mixture of defiance and a desperate plea for him to choose a different path. The weight of his entire past—the syndicate, the violence, the betrayals—seemed to press down on his broad shoulders all at once.
"She’s not running away from the law, Miller," Julian said quietly, lowering his weapon slowly to the concrete floor. "She’s taking it straight to the people who built this cage."
Before Sarah could pull the trigger, Julian lunged sideways, slamming his body into Sarah’s arm and knocking her aim wide just as she fired. The bullet shattered the passenger-side window of the sports car, spraying glass across the interior.

Elena hit the gas pedal hard, and the car rocketed out of the warehouse, disappearing into the dark night harbor just as the sirens of true federal backup began wailing in the distance.
