Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Past

The heavy oak doors of Julian’s private study muffled the sounds of the mansion, but the silence inside was far more deafening. Julian paced the length of the Persian rug, his black suit jacket discarded over a leather armchair, revealing the tight fabric of his white shirt and the dark ink wrapping around his forearms. Elena sat stiffly across the room, her red dress draped over the antique settee like a warning flag.

"An operative?" Julian repeated, his voice laced with skepticism, though a cold knot had formed in his stomach. "Clara has been with us for six months. She cleans the silver, she dusts the library, and she cries when a glass breaks. Are you telling me she’s a trained actor?"

"I’m telling you that her background check was completely fabricated," Elena said, tossing a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk between them. "I had our private investigator dig deeper after I noticed the way she looked at your safe. She’s not who she says she is, Julian. And that pregnancy? I'd bet my life savings it’s just a clever prosthetic designed to elicit your sympathy."

Julian stopped pacing. His hand hovered over the folder for a long moment before he finally picked it up. He flipped open the cover, his dark eyes scanning the documents inside. Photographs of Clara meeting with a known rival in a dim alleyway stared back at him. Birth certificates that didn't match. Financial transactions routed through offshore accounts.

"Why didn't you show me this sooner?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave as a cold anger began to replace his protective instincts.

Elena crossed her arms, a triumphant smirk playing at the corners of her lips. "Because you wouldn't have believed me. You were too busy playing the white knight to notice the dagger she was sliding between your ribs."

Julian stared at the photographs, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his stubble-lined cheek. The emotional betrayal hit him harder than any physical blow ever could. He had risked everything to defend Clara in the hallway, believing her to be an innocent victim of domestic cruelty. If these files were accurate, he had just harbored a viper in his own home.

Without another word, Julian turned on his heel and strode toward the heavy study door, throwing it open to march down the long corridor toward the east wing.

Elena watched him leave, her expression hardening as she whispered into the empty room, "Let's see you protect her when you find out who sent her."
