Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The cold marble floor felt like ice against Clara's back, but the internal chill was far worse. Julian kept his hand firmly on her shoulder, his thumb tracing a slow, grounding circle to calm her panic. Above them, Elena’s silhouette loomed in the shattered glass of the antique mirror, her red dress looking less like a symbol of elegance and more like a stain of fresh blood.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Elena whispered, her voice dangerously quiet now, stripped of its previous hysteria. "You think hiding her in this house gives you immunity?"

Julian did not turn around to face her. Instead, he helped Clara to her feet, his movements deliberate and infinitely tender. Clara leaned heavily against him, her breath hitching as she clutched her swollen abdomen, whispering a soft "thank you" that was barely audible over the hum of the estate's central heating.

"Go to the east wing, Clara," Julian instructed, ignoring Elena entirely. "Lock the door and don't open it for anyone."

Clara nodded hurriedly, casting one terrified glance at Elena before scurrying down the corridor, her light blue uniform rustling softly in the empty space. Once the sound of her footsteps faded away, Julian finally stood up to face Elena. The height difference was imposing, but Elena did not flinch. Her eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom.

"She’s carrying your child, isn't she?" Elena demanded, stepping closer until she was nearly chest-to-chest with him. The tattoos on Julian's neck seemed to pulse under the harsh chandelier light as he exhaled a slow, measured breath.

"She is carrying an innocent life," Julian replied neutrally, refusing to confirm or deny the accusation outright. "Something you clearly have no regard for."

Elena let out a bitter, humorless laugh that echoed off the white paneled walls. "Innocent? You fool. That girl isn't a maid, Julian. She’s an operative planted by your father’s enemies, and that baby isn't yours to protect—it's a ticking time bomb meant to destroy everything we built."

Julian’s eyes flickered with a sudden, dangerous realization that made his calm facade crack.
