Chapter 9 - The Return of the Ghost

The brilliant glare of the crystal chandelier illuminated every corner of the grand foyer, freezing the violent chaos into a surreal, horrifying tableau. Elena stood at the top of the winding staircase, her body trembling violently, her hands and clothes stained with dark crimson. Despite the pale, ghostly pallor of her face, her eyes burned with an intense, unbreakable fire.

"Madison," Elena’s voice rang out, clear and steady, cutting through the hum of the restarting HVAC system.

Madison froze, the tactical flashlight slipping slightly in her manicured hand. She slowly turned her head upward, her perfectly coiffed blonde hair falling across her cheek as she stared at the woman she had left for dead.

"Elena," Madison breathed, the color completely draining from her face. "How... how are you standing?"

Ethan scrambled up from the Persian rug, wiping a streak of blood from his lip, and stared up at his mother in sheer disbelief. "Mom! You shouldn't be moving—"

"I had to, Ethan," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly as she gripped the wooden banister for support. She took one agonizing step down the stairs, her bare feet leaving faint crimson prints on the pristine wood. "Because I needed to watch her face when the truth finally came out."

Richard slowly stood up from behind the mahogany pillar, letting go of Leo’s hand. He looked from Elena down to the open ledger on the floor, and then back to Madison. The absolute betrayal in his eyes was palpable.

"You lied to me," Richard whispered, his voice cracking with a mix of heartbreak and pure rage. "You told me she was losing her mind. You told me she was the one destroying the family."

Madison’s mask of calm superiority finally shattered completely. Her lips curled into a snarl of pure desperation. She reached into her burgundy jacket, pulling out a heavy, steel-encased flash drive and holding it up like a weapon.

"I built this company, Richard! You were nothing before I gave you my network!" Madison shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble pillars. She took a step backward toward the upper landing, eyeing Viktor, who was slowly rising to his feet near the blood-stained tile. "And if I can't have it, no one can."

"Don't move, Madison," Viktor muttered, raising his suppressed weapon once more, but this time, his barrel wasn't pointed at Ethan.

Viktor slowly swung the weapon around, aiming it directly at Richard’s chest.

"What are you doing?" Madison gasped, staring at her own operative in shock.

Viktor’s face remained entirely devoid of emotion. "Orders change, Ms. Vance. The highest bidder always wins, and someone just deposited five million into an offshore account with my name on it."

The entire room went dead silent. Even the rain outside seemed to quiet, leaving only the heavy, ragged breathing of the people trapped in the grand entryway.

Ethan slowly lowered his hands, his eyes darting to the side, where the heavy brass fire poker rested against the marble fireplace just ten feet away.

Viktor tightened his finger on the trigger, his cold eyes locking onto Richard’s heart.

"Say goodbye, Mr. Vance," Viktor whispered.

Suddenly, the front door—hanging half off its broken hinges—was kicked wide open a second time, and the blinding blue-and-red flashing lights of half a dozen police cruisers flooded the hallway.
