Chapter 12 - The Pulsing Amber Light

The rhythmic, electronic beeping from the steel-encased laptop echoed off the marble pillars of the grand foyer like a ticking time bomb. The solid, pulsing amber light cast an eerie glow across the tactical officer's grim face as he held the device out toward Agent Vance.
"Sir, it's a dead-man's switch," the officer reported, his voice tight with tension. "If the primary decryption key isn't entered within sixty seconds, the entire drive will self-destruct, wiping every financial record, every shell corporation, and every transaction straight off the cloud."
Agent Vance snatched the laptop from the officer's hands, his eyes darting frantically across the scrolling command-line interface on the screen. "Damn it! It's encrypted with a dynamic twenty-four-character biometric hash. We don't have the biometric profile!"
Madison laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the high ceiling. She leaned casually against the banister, despite the steel handcuffs binding her wrists. "You can't brute-force that code, Agent. Not in a lifetime. Richard’s entire legacy—his fortune, his reputation, his company—is about to vanish into thin air. And there is nothing you can do to stop it."
Richard felt the ground practically drop out from under him. The staggering reality of total ruin washed over him. He had spent his entire adult life building Vance Enterprises, sacrificing family dinners, quiet weekends, and moments with his sons, all to create an empire. Now, in the span of a single rainy evening, it was all being systematically erased.
He looked over at Elena, who was leaning heavily against the wooden banister, her face pale and exhausted. Then his gaze dropped to Leo, who was staring up at him with wide, frightened eyes, holding the black smartphone.
"Dad," Leo whispered softly, stepping closer to his father and tugging at the cuff of his grey suit jacket.
"Not now, Leo, I need to think," Richard muttered, his voice strained as he watched Agent Vance frantically hammer commands into the keyboard.
"Dad, look at the phone," Leo insisted, holding the device out so the screen was visible. "The call... I didn't hang up when I called Ethan. The line stayed open."
Richard blinked, his mind struggling to connect the dots. "What are you talking about?"
"When Madison and Marcus were arguing in the study earlier today," Leo said, his voice trembling slightly but clear as a bell, "I recorded them. Marcus yelled the master override code to Madison because he didn't trust her to remember it. He said it out loud."
Agent Vance whipped his head around, his eyes locking onto Leo with intense urgency. "Kid, what did you say? Did you capture the audio?"
Leo nodded rapidly, his fingers flying across the screen of the black smartphone. He tapped a small red icon, bringing up an audio waveform file recorded less than an hour ago, right before the chaos in the foyer began.
"Play it," Agent Vance commanded, stepping down the stairs until he stood right in front of the boy.
Leo pressed play. Through the tiny speaker of the smartphone, Marcus’s voice echoed clearly through the silent foyer: "The override is V-9-Delta-7-Omega-Alpha-4. Don't mess it up, Madison."
Agent Vance didn't waste a single second. He lunged back toward the laptop, his fingers hammering the sequence into the tactical keyboard just as the countdown hit the final three seconds.
The amber light flickered violently, turned a brilliant, steady green, and the scrolling text on the screen stopped dead. The self-destruct sequence was disarmed.
Madison’s jaw dropped, the triumphant smirk vanishing from her face in an instant. She let out a strangled gasp, her knees buckling slightly beneath her as the reality of her defeat set in.
"No... that's impossible," Madison whispered, staring in horror at the green light.
Agent Vance let out a long, shuddering breath of relief. He looked up, nodding approvingly at Leo. "Good job, son. That just saved a multi-billion-dollar investigation."

Before anyone could take another breath, the front door’s remaining frame was shoved aside again, and Ethan stumbled back into the foyer, dragging a handcuffed Marcus by the collar of his expensive designer shirt.
