Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Pantry

The metallic scraping sound echoed from the back hallway, cutting through the tense silence like a dull blade. Every eye in the grand foyer snapped toward the arched doorway leading to the kitchen and the pantry. The air grew noticeably colder, carrying the sharp, chemical scent of bleach mixed with something metallic and metallic-sweet.
Richard took a half-step forward, his broad shoulders tensed inside his tailored grey suit. His face was pale, devoid of the confident corporate aura he usually carried.
"Who is back there?" Richard called out, his voice echoing hollowly against the marble pillars.
No one answered. The scraping stopped abruptly, replaced by the soft, rhythmic sound of dripping water—or something thicker.
Ethan didn't wait for permission or caution. Pushing past Richard and Madison, he sprinted across the pristine white tiles, his wet boots leaving dark smudges on the floor. He threw himself through the arched kitchen doorway, disappearing into the shadows beyond.
"Ethan, wait!" Leo cried out, starting to follow his older brother, but Richard caught him firmly by the shoulder, pulling the boy back against his chest.
"Stay here, Leo," Richard commanded, his voice tight with fear. He looked at Madison, whose face had gone chalk-white under her foundation. "Madison, what is in the service wing? Tell me the truth right now."
Madison swallowed hard, her composure finally fracturing. She crossed her arms tightly over the burgundy suit, her fingers digging into the fabric. "I don't know what you're talking about, Richard. Sarah and I were only in the study."
"That's a lie," Sarah piped up from the stairs, her voice trembling as she clutched the heavy ledger to her chest. She began backing away toward the upper landing. "We were clearing the safe, Madison. You told me to get the documents before the police—"
"Shut your mouth, Sarah!" Madison hissed, her blue eyes flashing with sudden, dangerous fury.
Before the argument could escalate, a sharp, choked gasp echoed from the dark pantry hallway. A second later, Ethan stumbled backward into the kitchen archway, his face completely drained of color. In his arms, he carried a heavy, blood-soaked Persian rug, dragging its fringed edges across the kitchen floor.
"Ethan!" Richard yelled, rushing forward to help take the weight of the rug. "What is this? What did you find?"
As Richard grabbed the edge of the fabric, the rug unfurled slightly on the kitchen floor. Rolled up inside the thick wool was a heavy, industrial-sized plastic container, its lid partially ajar. Peeking out from the opening was a corner of a familiar brown and white maid's uniform, stained with dark, coagulated blood.
Maria let out a piercing, hysterical shriek, dropping to her knees and covering her face with her trembling hands.
Ethan looked up, his eyes burning with tears as he stared directly at Madison.

"This isn't the first time someone 'slipped' in this house, is it?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with rage. "Where is the real Maria, Madison? Because the woman kneeling on our floor right now... is wearing a dead girl's clothes."
