Chapter 7 - Shards of Glass and Silence

The explosion of shattering stained glass filled the grand foyer with a blinding cascade of light and flying debris. Shards of colored glass rained down like jagged diamonds onto the pristine marble floor, embedding themselves into the dark crimson smear near the white bucket. Leo screamed, throwing his arms over his head as Richard instinctively pulled the boy down behind a heavy mahogany pillar.

"Get down!" Richard roared, shielding Leo with his own body while casting a desperate glance toward Ethan.

Ethan had already dropped low, his hand gripping the edge of the blood-soaked Persian rug for leverage. His eyes were fixed on the shattered doorway where two tall figures stepped through the broken frame. They wore dark tactical jackets, their faces partially obscured by heavy hoods, moving with the cold, practiced precision of professional operatives.

Madison didn't flinch as the men entered. She lowered the brass paperweight, her expression shifting from panic back to chilling authority.

"You're late, Viktor," Madison said, her voice cutting cleanly through the settling dust.

The larger of the two men pulled back his hood, revealing a jagged scar running from his jawline to his ear. He scanned the room with dead, lifeless eyes, his gaze lingering briefly on Ethan and Richard before locking onto Sarah cowering on the upper landing.

"Traffic on the bridge was backed up," Viktor replied, his voice a gravelly rumble. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a sleek, suppressed firearm. "Looks like you had a few complications."

"Complications are an understatement," Madison hissed, gesturing toward Ethan and Leo. "The boy has a recording. And Elena isn't dead yet—she crawled into the guest bath before I could finish."

Richard’s blood ran cold. He looked down at Leo, whose small chest was heaving with silent, terrifying sobs. The realization hit Richard with the force of a freight train: Madison wasn't just a corporate embezzler; she was a calculated predator who had systematically infiltrated his life, his company, and now his home, with murder as her endgame.

"You planned all of this," Richard whispered, his voice shaking with a mixture of grief and blinding rage as he looked up at Madison. "Every single bit of it."

Madison offered a cold, pitying smile. "You were too busy building an empire to notice who was actually running it, Richard. The house, the accounts, the family—it all belongs to me now."

Ethan slowly shifted his weight, his fingers sliding beneath the heavy brass edge of the table near the kitchen archway. His eyes met his younger brother's for a fraction of a second, communicating a desperate, wordless plan.

Viktor stepped forward, raising the suppressed weapon and pointing it directly at Richard’s chest.

"Don't move, Mr. Vance," Viktor muttered, taking a slow step onto the marble. "Let's make this quick."

Suddenly, the kitchen lights flickered and died completely, plunging the grand foyer into near-total darkness, save for the harsh headlights streaming through the broken front door.
