Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Ledger

The silence in the grand foyer became suffocating. Richard’s gaze darted between Leo’s clenched fist and Sarah’s frozen posture on the stairs. The heavy scent of copper from the blood on the floor seemed to thicken, pressing against the lungs of everyone in the room.

"What is in that ledger, Sarah?" Richard asked, his voice low, steady, and laden with a sudden, icy suspicion. He stepped past Madison, ignoring her warning hiss, and took three steps up the grand staircase, blocking Sarah’s path downward.

Sarah clutched the heavy, leather-bound book tighter, her knuckles turning as white as Leo's had moments before. She didn't look at Richard; instead, her cold eyes fixed on Madison standing below.

"It's just household inventory, Mr. Vance," Sarah replied, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. "Nothing that concerns you."

"Hand it over," Richard demanded, holding out his hand, his palm open and unyielding.

Before Sarah could make a move, Madison stepped onto the first riser of the stairs, her expression hardening into something resembling calculated panic. She placed a hand over Richard's outstretched palm, pushing it down.

"Richard, don't be absurd. You are letting a terrified, hysterical child dictate how you treat our colleagues," Madison said, her tone dripping with manufactured concern. She turned her head slightly, addressing the maid still kneeling by the bucket. "Maria, take the bucket and clean the master suite upstairs. Now."

Maria scrambled backward, her brown and white uniform rustling against the marble. "Yes, ma'am. Right away, ma'am."

"No one is moving," Richard snapped, his eyes flashing with sudden, blinding fury. He pulled his arm away from Madison with a sharp jerk. "Maria stays right where she is. And you, Sarah, open that book or I swear I will have security throw you off this property."

Leo watched the exchange, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He knew the ledger contained secrets. He had heard his mother talking about it on the phone the night before—talk of missing funds, forged signatures, and a secret offshore account bearing Madison’s name. Elena had discovered the truth, and that was why she was bleeding on the bathroom floor.

Slowly, Sarah unclasped the brass lock of the heavy leather book. The metallic click echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous hallway. She lifted the front cover, revealing the first page filled with neat, handwritten columns of numbers and names.

Richard leaned in, his eyes scanning the lines. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking hollow and aged.

"What is this?" Richard whispered, his voice trembling. "Madison... what did you do to my company's accounts?"

Madison’s mask slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a look of pure, unadulterated malice. She took a slow step backward, her hand sliding inside the pocket of her burgundy jacket.

"I did what was necessary, Richard," Madison said softly, her voice no longer sweet. "And Elena was about to ruin everything."

Suddenly, the front door rattled violently from the outside, and heavy, frantic footsteps pounded up the porch steps. Someone was slamming against the oak door, shouting Richard's name.
