Chapter 13 - The Final Confession

Ethan hauled Marcus across the threshold of the shattered front door, shoving the struggling man forward until he collided heavily with the base of the marble staircase. Marcus’s designer shirt was torn, his hair disheveled, and his face smeared with dirt from his desperate sprint through the muddy perimeter woods.
"Got him," Ethan panted, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead as he glared down at the cowering chief financial officer. "He tried to vault the back fence, but he didn't count on the security grid being automated."
Agent Vance stepped forward, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Marcus’s wrists with practiced efficiency. "Marcus Sterling, you're under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy, and accessory to attempted murder. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Marcus didn't fight back. He slumped against the marble pillar, his shoulders shaking as he cast a bitter, venomous glare toward Madison.
"She promised me," Marcus muttered, his voice cracking with panic. "She said if we drained the offshore accounts, we could start over in Zurich. It was all her idea! She forged the signatures, she set up the shell companies, and she's the one who pushed Elena down the stairs!"
Madison’s head snapped toward Marcus, her blue eyes flashing with pure rage. "You pathetic coward! You were the one who suggested skimming the pension funds in the first place!"
"Shut up, both of you," Agent Vance commanded sharply, gesturing to the surrounding tactical officers. "Get them out of my sight. Transport them in separate vehicles and make sure there's no communication between them."
As the officers hauled Madison and Marcus toward the broken front door, neither of them spoke another word. The heavy oak panels, splintered and ruined, framed the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers outside as the two conspirators were led out into the cold autumn rain.
The grand foyer finally grew quiet, save for the hum of the central heating and the steady dripping of water from the broken stained-glass window.
Richard slowly walked over to the base of the stairs where Elena was still standing. He looked up at her, his eyes filled with a heavy, profound sorrow that went far beyond mere regret. He didn't try to touch her this time; he respected the invisible barrier that years of neglect and betrayal had built between them.
"Elena," Richard said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "I know saying sorry isn't enough. I let ambition blind me. I let someone toxic into our home because I thought she was an asset to the company. I nearly lost everything... and worse, I nearly lost you and the boys."
Elena looked down at him, her expression softening just a fraction, though the emotional scars of the evening remained visible on her face. She took a slow, deliberate step down the wooden stair, leaning on the banister for support.
"You didn't just nearly lose the company, Richard," Elena said quietly, her voice steady and piercing. "You lost your family a long time ago. Tonight was just the consequence of ignoring what was right in front of your eyes."
Richard swallowed hard, nodding slowly. He accepted her words without a single defense.
Ethan stood a few feet away, watching his parents with a complicated mix of exhaustion and lingering anger. He put a protective arm around his younger brother, pulling Leo close against his side.
"Come on, Leo," Ethan said gently, looking down at the boy who still clutched the black smartphone. "Let's get you upstairs. The medics are waiting to check Mom's injuries."
Leo nodded, but before he turned to follow his brother up the stairs, he looked back down at the blood-stained tile near the white bucket, where the final traces of the nightmare were slowly being washed away by the falling rain.

As the family began to move toward the upper landing, a sudden, sharp chime from the smartphone in Leo's hand stopped everyone dead in their tracks.
