Chapter 11 - Footsteps in the Master Suite

The sudden, heavy thud from the master bedroom above sent a fresh wave of panic rippling through the grand foyer. The federal agents moving to handcuff Madison instantly halted, their hands dropping to their holstered sidearms.
"Agent Vance, we cleared the perimeter," one of the tactical officers shouted from the doorway, his voice tense. "No other suspects were logged on the property."
"Then what was that?" Agent Vance demanded, his eyes darting upward toward the intricate plaster molding of the ceiling.
Madison let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, her cuffs clinking as she twisted against the grip of the officers holding her arms. "You think I worked alone, Agent? You think a woman of my position relies on hired muscle alone? There is a contingency plan for everything."
Richard tightened his grip on Elena’s shoulders, shielding her slightly as he looked up the stairs. "Elena, who else is in the house? Did you see anyone else upstairs?"
Elena shook her head slowly, her face pale and damp with sweat. "No... when she pushed me, I only saw Sarah in the hallway. There shouldn't be anyone else up there."
Leo clutched the black smartphone so hard his knuckles were chalk-white. He remembered the voice on the phone earlier—the second line that had picked up just before the connection died. It wasn't Ethan, and it wasn't Madison. It was a man's voice, whispering instructions about a safe deposit box.
"It's Marcus," Leo whispered, his voice trembling so badly the words were barely audible.
Richard looked down at his son, shock crossing his face. "Marcus? Marcus is our chief financial officer. He's been with the firm for fifteen years. Why would he be here?"
"Because he's the one holding the offshore keys, Richard," Madison sneered, her eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "The moment the police arrived, he was programmed to wipe the primary servers. By the time your federal agents check the accounts, there won't be a single penny left to your name."
Agent Vance’s face hardened. He barked an order into his radio. "Team Two, breach the master bedroom from the balcony! Move, move, move!"
Two tactical officers sprinted up the stairs, bypassing Elena and Richard with practiced agility. They reached the top landing, kicked open the heavy double doors of the master suite, and disappeared into the shadows inside.
A tense, agonizing silence descended upon the foyer. Everyone held their breath, listening intently to the muffled sounds of shouting and heavy boots stomping across the hardwood floors above.
Suddenly, a loud crash of breaking glass echoed from the second-story balcony overlooking the back garden, followed by a sharp, echoing gunshot.
Ethan bolted toward the rear service stairs, ignoring his mother’s warning cries. "Ethan, no! Come back!" Elena screamed.
Richard stepped forward, letting go of Elena for a fraction of a second, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked up at the master suite just as one of the tactical officers reappeared on the landing, panting heavily.
"Agent Vance!" the officer yelled down, holding up a heavy, steel-encased laptop covered in blinking red lights. "We got the server... but the shooter jumped onto the greenhouse roof. He's heading for the perimeter woods!"
Agent Vance cursed under his breath. "After him! Don't let him reach the treeline!"
Down in the foyer, Madison smirked, blood trickling from a small scratch on her lip. "You got the box, officer... but you'll never open the file. The password died with Marcus's associate."

Before anyone could process her warning, the blinking red lights on the recovered laptop suddenly shifted to a solid, pulsing amber, and a robotic countdown began to play from the internal speakers.
