Chapter 1 - Echoes on the Staircase

The air inside the grand foyer tasted of copper and heavy rain. Leo stood frozen on the lower landing of the winding staircase, his small fingers gripping the black smartphone so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. His breathing came in shallow, ragged gasps that echoed against the marble pillars. Only seconds ago, his voice had cracked into the receiver, begging Ethan to return before it was too late. Now, the line was dead, and the silence of the massive house pressed down on him like an physical weight.

Down below, the white bucket on the floor lay tipped on its side, a dark crimson streak marring the pristine tile near the front entrance. Maria, the longtime maid, knelt beside the mess in her brown and white uniform, her hands trembling as she dabbed at the floor with a stained rag.

The heavy front door swung open, admitting a gust of damp autumn wind. Richard strode in first, his tailored grey suit immaculate despite the weather, his tall frame radiating immediate tension. Close behind him walked Madison, the elegant woman in the burgundy suit, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, her expression entirely unreadable.

Richard stopped short, his gaze darting from the bucket to the dark smear on the floor.

"Clara, what happened?" Richard asked, his voice sharp with sudden anxiety as he looked down at the kneeling maid.

Maria kept her head bowed, her shoulders shaking slightly beneath the coarse fabric of her uniform.

"She slipped, sir," Maria whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the central heating. "It was just a clumsy accident."

Leo could no longer contain the fury and terror burning inside his chest. He bolted down the remaining steps, his light blue T-shirt with the American flag graphic fluttering in the rush. He didn't look at the maid or the bucket. Instead, he lunged forward, grabbing Madison by the expensive shoulder of her burgundy suit and spinning her around.

"No!" Leo screamed, tears spilling hot and fast down his flushed cheeks as he pointed a trembling finger directly into her face. "Madison pushed Mommy!"

Richard whipped his head around, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he stared at the boy.

Before Richard could utter a single word, the upstairs guest bathroom door creaked open with a slow, agonizing groan.
