Chapter 9

The wind seemed to die down instantly, leaving an oppressive, suffocating silence hanging over the stone balcony. Julian turned his gaze from Arthur back to Elena, his mind racing to process the name that had just slipped from his uncle's lips. Katarina. It was a name that belonged to a missing persons file from a high-profile European corporate espionage case a decade ago—a case that had conveniently vanished from Interpol databases shortly after Elena arrived in the United States.

Elena did not flinch, nor did she step back. Her posture remained straight, her hands resting calmly against the fabric of her apron, though the muscles in her jaw tightened visibly. "My past is my own, Arthur," she said, her voice dropping an octave into a cold, metallic register that Julian had never heard before. "It has nothing to do with the Vance family trust or the secrets buried beneath these floorboards."

Arthur let out a low, mocking laugh, leaning his weight against the stone balustrade. "Everything is connected in this house, my dear. Why do you think you were placed in this specific household ten years ago? Do you honestly believe it was a random stroke of good fortune that landed a trained intelligence analyst in the service of Julian’s father?"

Julian felt the ground literally drop out from beneath his feet. He looked between the two of them, the betrayal stinging sharper than any physical wound. "Elena... is that true? Were you sent here?"

Elena finally broke her gaze from Arthur, turning her dark, expressive eyes toward Julian. There was no guilt in her expression, only a profound, heavy sorrow. "Julian, listen to me. When I came to this house, I was running from men who wanted me dead. Your father offered me sanctuary, yes, but he also asked for something in return. I was his insurance policy—a trained operative tasked with monitoring the estate for the exact moment Arthur or Marcus attempted to return."

Julian stepped back, shaking his head in disbelief. "You lied to me every single day. Every meal we shared, every conversation about Nica’s future... it was all part of an assignment?"

"No," Elena said fiercely, taking a step toward him and reaching out a hand, though she stopped short of touching his arm. "The assignment ended three years ago when your father passed away. I stayed because I had nowhere else to go, and because I swore to protect this family—to protect you and Nica—with my life. You have to believe that."

Arthur pushed himself off the balustrade, stepping closer to the open French door. "She can play the devoted guardian all she likes, Julian, but the truth remains: the house is compromised, the assets are frozen by federal decree as of midnight tonight, and the men outside the gates are closing in."
