Chapter 8

The heavy glass of the nursery French doors separated them by barely an inch. Arthur Vance stood motionless on the moonlit stone balcony, his breath pluming into white vapor in the chilly autumn air. Despite the decades that had allegedly passed since his supposed demise in the refinery fire, Arthur looked remarkably unchanged, save for a jagged silver scar that cut across his left cheekbone from jaw to ear.
Julian pressed his palm flat against the cold glass pane, his dark eyes locked onto the face of the man who was supposed to be resting in an unmarked grave. "You're dead," Julian said aloud, his voice muffled by the double-paned glass, though the intensity of his tone conveyed every ounce of his fury.
Arthur’s lips curled into a faint, sardonic smile. He raised his right hand and tapped twice against the glass, right over the latch. Without a sound, the exterior security lock clicked open—a master override code that only the original architect of the estate possessed.
Julian didn't hesitate. He released the latch and pushed the French door outward, stepping directly onto the cold stone balcony to confront the phantom from his past. The night wind whipped his dark hair across his face, but he didn't flinch.
"You took a massive risk coming back here, Arthur," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh, controlled whisper. "The federal immunity agreements are sitting inside my bedroom right now. I know about the payoff to the district attorney. I know the entire empire is built on fraud."
Arthur let out a dry, rasping chuckle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "You think those papers matter, Julian? You think a few dusty contracts signed by your dead grandfather have any legal weight in the real world today? The world has changed. The people pulling the strings now don't care about old scandals; they care about leverage."
From behind Julian in the doorway, Elena stepped out onto the balcony, keeping her body positioned defensively between the open door and the interior where Nica slept. Her red dress billowed in the wind, and her expression was an impenetrable mask of calm resolve.
"Who is pulling the strings, Arthur?" Elena asked, her voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind. "Because Marcus isn't working alone, is he? Someone financed his return to the estate."

Arthur’s smile faded instantly, replaced by a sharp, calculating glint in his dark eyes. He looked past Julian, fixing his gaze squarely on Elena. "Ah, the observant maid from Eastern Europe. You always were sharper than you looked, Elena. Or should I say... Katarina?"
Julian spun around to face Elena, his eyes wide with sudden, staggering shock. "What did he just call you?"
