Chapter 15

The first rays of pale amber sunlight broke across the eastern horizon, piercing through the dense canopy of pine trees and casting a warm, golden glow over the tranquil waters of the lake. The electric boat drifted quietly to a complete stop beside the weathered wooden planks of the logging dock.

Julian stepped off the bow of the boat, securing the mooring line to a heavy iron cleat with practiced, efficient movements. He turned back and offered his hand to Elena, who stepped gracefully onto the dock while keeping Nica cradled securely against her chest. The infant let out a soft, contented sigh, stretching her tiny legs in her grey onesie as the morning warmth washed over them.

Arthur remained on the boat, leaning against the gunwale with his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his dark wool coat. He looked older in the clear light of dawn—a tired, weathered man who had spent decades trapped in the shadows of his own making.

"This is where I get off," Arthur said quietly, nodding toward a rugged dirt access road that wound its way up into the rugged northern hills.

Julian stopped, turning to face his uncle with a complex mixture of resentment and lingering familial tie. "You don't have to disappear again, Arthur. If we face this together—"

"No, Julian," Arthur interrupted gently, a faint, melancholic smile touching his lips. "My chapter ended thirty years ago in that refinery. Let the dead stay dead. You, Elena, and Nica... you have a real future waiting for you on the other side of this sunrise."

Without waiting for a reply, Arthur turned and stepped off the stern of the boat onto the narrow wooden boardwalk, vanishing into the dense thicket of pine trees along the access road within seconds.

Julian watched him go until the rustling of the brush faded completely into the morning songs of the forest birds. He turned back to Elena, who stood waiting by the edge of the dock, her expression serene and unburdened. The heavy leather portfolio rested safely in Julian’s hand.

"Are you ready?" Julian asked softly, stepping close to them and wrapping his arm around Elena’s shoulders, drawing her and the baby into a warm, protective embrace.

Elena looked up into his eyes, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her kind face. "I have been ready for a very long time, Julian."

Together, the three of them walked up the sunlit dirt road toward the waiting vehicle, leaving the shadows of the past behind them as a bright, unbroken horizon stretched out endlessly before their eyes.
