Chapter 10

Before Julian could respond to Arthur’s warning, a sharp, piercing sound shattered the night air. It was the deep, resonant tone of the estate’s primary perimeter gate alarm, echoing across the rolling hills and bouncing off the stone walls of the mansion.

Julian whipped around, rushing back inside the nursery with Elena and Arthur trailing closely behind. He threw himself onto the mahogany desk and slammed the security laptop open. The multi-angle camera grid flared to life on the screen. The driveway gates had been breached. Three heavy black SUVs, unmarked and idling with their high beams blindingly bright, sat parked across the gravel courtyard.

Men in tactical gear—wearing matte-black body armor and carrying suppressed carbines—spilled out of the vehicles with military precision. They didn't shout, and they didn't waste time. They moved toward the main entrance with terrifying efficiency, communicating through short-range radio headsets that jammed the estate’s local Wi-Fi network.

"Federal marshals?" Julian asked, his voice tight with adrenaline as he watched the tactical feed.

"No," Elena said, leaning over his shoulder to study the insignia on the tactical vests. "Look at the patch on their shoulders. There are no national insignias, no department identifiers. Those are private security contractors working for the Global Energy Syndicate—the exact conglomerate Marcus sold our patent portfolio to last week."

Arthur walked over to the reinforced closet door in the corner of the room, pulled a hidden latch, and swung it open to reveal a concealed weapons locker containing several tactical shotguns and boxes of ammunition. "Your grandfather anticipated this exact scenario," Arthur muttered, grabbing a heavy pump-action shotgun and chambering a round with a sharp, metallic clack. "He knew that the moment the federal immunity agreements were discovered, the Syndicate would send a clean-up crew to eliminate everyone in this house."

Julian stared at the weapon in his uncle’s hands, his mind rebelling against the sudden escalation into violence. "We are not going to shoot our way out of this, Arthur. There’s a baby in this room. We need to secure the safe room in the basement."

"The basement is a tomb," Elena corrected sharply, moving to the nursery door and sliding the heavy deadbolt into place just as the sound of heavy boots echoed up the grand staircase. "They already control the subterranean service hatches. If we go down there, we are walking straight into a trap."

Heavy fists began to pound against the oak door of the nursery—rhythmic, brutal, and relentless. The wood groaned under the immense force, splintering slightly around the brass lock housing. Time had officially run out.
