Chapter 14

The electric boat surged through the dark waters of the lake, leaving the shadowy silhouette of the Vance estate far behind in the distance. The cool night wind rushed past them, carrying away the lingering smell of ozone, cordite, and dust. Julian kept both hands firmly on the steering console, his dark eyes fixed on the distant southern shoreline where the amber lights of the abandoned logging dock flickered through the pine trees.
Elena sat in the passenger seat beside him, her posture relaxed yet vigilant. She cradled Nica against her shoulder, and the infant finally stirred, letting out a soft yawn before blinking sleepily at the stars overhead. The nightmare inside the mansion felt miles away, yet the gravity of what they had uncovered hung heavily over the three occupants of the boat.
Arthur stood near the stern, his weathered face illuminated by the soft blue glow of the navigation instruments. He stared back toward the northern shore where tiny pinpricks of light—the Syndicate’s search party—flashed among the trees along the water's edge.
"They won't give up chase," Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle hum of the electric motor. "The portfolio you recovered from the mattress contains the cryptographic keys to every offshore account the Syndicate uses to fund its operations. As long as those documents exist, you and Nica will never truly be safe."
Julian didn't look back. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the thick leather-bound portfolio, feeling the heavy gold-leaf crest embossed on the front cover. "Then we don't run anymore," Julian said, his voice steady and resolute. "We take these files straight to the independent press in New York. Not the local authorities, not the federal field office in Boston. We broadcast the entire truth to the public where it can never be buried again."
Elena turned her head, looking at Julian with a profound, quiet admiration in her dark eyes. "It will destroy the Vance name," she warned softly. "Every asset, every privilege, every cent will be seized by the courts."

Julian glanced down at Nica, whose tiny hand was now resting peacefully against Elena’s collarbone. A faint, genuine smile touched the corners of Julian’s mouth for the first time in days. "Let it burn," Julian said. "Real freedom isn't built on stolen wealth and buried secrets. It’s built on the truth."
The boat glided smoothly into the wooden slips of the abandoned logging dock, bumping softly against the tire fenders with a gentle thud. The motor whined down to a silent stop.
