Chapter 11

The wood of the nursery door splintered further as another coordinated strike hit the frame, cracking the heavy oak deadbolt housing clean through. Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy mahogany bookshelf standing against the east wall and shoved it hard, sliding it across the hardwood floor to block the splintering entryway.

"Help me with this," Julian shouted to Arthur, his adrenaline surging past the fear.

Arthur moved instantly, throwing his weight against the other side of the shelving unit just as the door burst open with a deafening crash. Splintered wood and shattered brass flew across the room as tactical boots crossed the threshold. A black-clad operative shoved his carbine barrel through the gap, firing a suppressed round that slammed into the wall inches above Julian’s head, showering them with plaster dust.

"This way!" Elena yelled, pulling open a narrow panel disguised as a full-length mirror near the walk-in closet.

Behind the mirror lay a steep, winding spiral staircase carved directly into the thick stone core of the mansion’s central chimney stack. It was an architectural relic from the nineteenth century, designed to allow the estate’s original owners to escape during labor riots or civil unrest.

"Go, go, go!" Arthur ordered, firing a single defensive blast from the shotgun into the ceiling to deter the advancing operatives before ducking into the dark opening behind Elena and Nica.

Julian was the last to enter. He grabbed the decorative brass handle on the inside of the mirror panel and pulled it shut with all his might. A heavy mechanical latch engaged with a satisfying click, blending the mirrored surface seamlessly back into the ornate wainscoting of the nursery wall just as two heavily armed operatives burst around the blocked bookshelf.

The spiral stone stairs were pitch black, slick with dampness and narrow enough that their shoulders scraped against the rough masonry walls with every step. Elena moved with surprising agility, one hand cradling Nica tightly against her chest while the other trailed along the cold stone wall to maintain her balance.

"How far down does this go?" Julian whispered from behind her, his breath coming in ragged gasps as they descended the endless spiral.

"All the way to the old boathouse on the lake," Elena called back, her voice echoing softly in the enclosed stone shaft. "It’s a quarter-mile underground. The Syndicate won't find us down there unless they know the exact architectural history of the original land grant."

Arthur brought up the rear, his heavy boots clanking rhythmically on the stone steps. "Don't underestimate them, Katarina. The Syndicate owns the engineering firms that updated this estate's blueprints five years ago. They have the digital scans of every hidden wall and chimney flue in this building."
