Chapter 5

The heavy iron hatch remained sealed, the deadbolt locked securely from the outer corridor. Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding his back down the cold concrete wall of the utility alcove until he sat flat on the dusty floor. He buried his face in his hands, his fingers tangling in his dark hair as the full weight of the revelation crashed down upon him.

"Arthur," Julian whispered hoarsely, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "The police report said he died in the blast at the South Boston refinery. There was a body, Elena. A dental match."

Elena stepped out from the shadows, gently adjusting Nica, who remained fast asleep despite the subterranean commotion. She knelt beside Julian, placing a comforting, steady hand on his tense shoulder. "Bodies can be fabricated, Julian, especially when men with immense wealth and powerful political connections want a messy scandal to disappear overnight. Your grandfather possessed enough influence to bury a dozen men."

Julian looked up, his dark eyes reflecting the dim green glow of the emergency exit sign. "If Arthur is alive, then everything we thought we knew about the family fortune is a lie. That refinery explosion wasn't an industrial accident. It was an execution—or a staged escape."

He pushed himself up to his feet, dusting off his white dress shirt with brisk, agitated motions. He walked over to the reinforced metal door of the archive room and inspected the locking mechanism. It was an old-school combination lock paired with a modern electronic keypad—a hybrid system installed during the Cold War paranoia of his grandfather's era.

"Can you open it?" Elena asked, shining the recovered flashlight beam onto the brass dials.

"The combination is based on a mathematical sequence tied to the Fibonacci numbers, integrated with the birth dates of the primary heirs," Julian muttered, his analytical mind kicking into gear as adrenaline sharpened his focus. "My father made me memorize it when I was twelve years old, just in case the house was ever compromised."

With steady, deliberate movements, Julian spun the heavy brass dial. Left to thirty-four, right to twenty-one, left to thirteen, and finally resting on eight. A heavy pneumatic hiss echoed through the door frame as the internal bolts retracted into their housings. With a sharp shove, Julian pushed the heavy steel door open, welcoming the cool night air that drifted down from the upper service corridors.

They ascended the stairs in single file, Elena taking the rear to ensure Nica remained shielded from any sudden drafts. As they re-entered the grand hallway beneath the chandelier, Julian noticed something on the polished hardwood floor near the library entrance. A single sheet of heavy, cream-colored parchment lay face up, bearing a handwritten message scrawled in black fountain pen ink: The mattress holds the answer you refuse to see.
