Chapter 12

The air grew steadily colder and heavier as they descended deeper into the subterranean tunnel, the dry dust of the mansion replaced by the sharp, earthy scent of lake water and rotting reeds. The stone walls narrowed, the spiral staircase giving way to a horizontal brick-lined corridor that sloped gently downward toward the shore.

Julian pulled a small LED penlight from his shirt pocket, clicking it on to cast a narrow beam of white light ahead of them. The beam illuminated damp red bricks covered in patches of pale green moss and ancient water stains left behind by decades of spring floods.

"We need to keep moving," Arthur urged, pausing briefly to listen for any sounds of pursuit echoing down the vertical chimney shaft behind them. "If they breach the upper seal, we’ll hear the resonance through the masonry."

Elena adjusted Nica, who stirred slightly in her grey onesie, letting out a soft, sleepy sigh before settling back against Elena’s shoulder. The infant’s remarkable resilience through the terrifying ordeal seemed almost otherworldly. Julian reached out, gently touching the baby’s tiny hand with his fingertips, feeling an overwhelming surge of fierce protective love that eclipsed his fear.

"When we reach the boathouse," Julian said quietly, keeping his eyes fixed on the path ahead, "what is waiting for us there? Do you have a vehicle hidden, Arthur?"

Arthur grunted, continuing his steady march down the damp brick tunnel. "I didn't survive thirty years in hiding by leaving my escape routes unmonitored. There’s an electric utility boat docked at the pier, fully charged and programmed with an autonomous GPS route that will take us across the state line before dawn."

Elena cast a skeptical glance over her shoulder at Arthur. "And who is piloting the boat, Arthur? You? Or is there another operative waiting at the dock with fresh orders from the Syndicate?"

Arthur stopped abruptly in his tracks, turning to face Elena with a cold, humorless stare. "If I wanted you dead, Katarina, I wouldn't have bothered pulling you out of the nursery. You survived the purge in Berlin because my brother valued your intellect, and I intend to keep it that way until we settle accounts with the board of directors."

Julian stepped between them, his dark eyes flashing with suppressed fury. "Enough. Both of you. We are not playing your cold war chess games anymore. The moment we cross that lake, we go straight to the federal authorities in Boston and blow this entire conspiracy wide open."

Arthur let out a dry, rasping laugh that echoed eerily off the curved brick ceiling. "And who do you think runs the federal field office in Boston, Julian? The exact same men who signed the immunity warrants in nineteen-ninety-five. We are entirely on our own."
