Chapter 8 - The Hidden Recorder

The small black digital recorder felt heavy in Elena’s trembling palm. The tiny red LED light blinked rhythmically, confirming that every chilling confession, every veiled threat, and every detail of the Vance family's dark conspiracy had been safely captured onto the internal memory card.

Elena slipped the device back into the hidden lining of her white apron, breathing a cautious sigh of relief. For weeks, she hadn't just been a nanny; she had been working secretly as an investigative researcher for a national news syndicate, hired by an anonymous whistleblower within the Vance campaign who knew that something was deeply wrong behind the polished doors of the estate.

The front door slammed shut as the last of the police cruisers backed down the long gravel driveway, their sirens finally fading into the quiet hum of the suburban night. The house was dead silent now, save for the soft, whimpering cries of the infant. Elena unfastened the wrap sling, gently lifting the baby out and rocking him against her shoulder until his breathing calmed down.

She needed to get out of the house before Julian’s legal team arrived. The Vance family’s lawyers were ruthless corporate sharks who could dismantle a search warrant before it even reached a judge. Elena walked quickly toward the private back exit, her sensible shoes clicking quietly against the floorboards.

As she reached for the brass handle of the French doors, a sudden, sharp beep echoed from the wall-mounted security panel near the kitchen entrance.

System Lockdown Activated. Master Override Engaged.

Elena froze, her hand hovering inches from the door handle. She spun around, staring at the control panel. The screen flashed a bright, hostile crimson. All exterior doors and windows had been automatically bolted from a remote terminal.

"Looking for a way out, Elena?"

A smooth, calm voice echoed from the dim hallway leading from the basement stairs.

Elena whipped around, her heart leaping into her throat. Stepping out of the shadows was not a police officer, nor was it Julian—it was Marcus Vance Jr., Julian’s younger brother, who was supposed to be studying abroad in Europe for the past six months.

Marcus wore an expensive designer sweater, his brown hair neatly combed, and a cold, predatory smile played across his lips. He held a heavy bronze paperweight in his right hand, tossing it lazily up in the air and catching it again.

"You dropped your pen in the study earlier," Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "Or should I say... your wire."
