Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The heavy silence of the study was broken only by the soft, rhythmic breathing of the infant asleep in the wrap sling. Elena stood frozen in the corner, her eyes fixed firmly on the Persian rug, wishing with every fiber of her being that she could melt into the dark wood-paneled walls. She knew too much now. In a house of powerful politicians and ruthless elites, knowing secrets was a death sentence.
Clara gripped the edge of the mahogany desk so hard her knuckles turned translucent. The Swiss medical report felt like a sheet of razor-sharp ice in her trembling hands. She looked up at Julian, seeing not the charismatic, ambitious man who graced the front pages of national newspapers, but a cold, calculating stranger who had outplayed her at her own lethal game.
"You knew," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with genuine vulnerability for the first time. Tears welled in the corners of her eyes, though she refused to let them fall. "You knew for weeks, and you just... played along?"
"A good politician never interrupts his opponent while they are in the middle of making a fatal mistake," Julian replied smoothly, straightening his red tie with practiced elegance. He didn't look angry anymore; his demeanor was terrifyingly clinical. "You thought you were clever, Clara. You thought marrying into this family gave you immunity to rewrite the rules. But you forgot that I built this dynasty from the ground up. I know every body buried beneath this foundation."
"I did it because you were going to cast me aside!" Clara suddenly shouted, losing her grip on her restraint as years of resentment boiled over. She pointed a shaking finger at his chest. "After the election, I was supposed to be traded in for a younger, more compliant political wife! I saw the emails, Julian! I saw the communications with your campaign strategist about quietly filing for divorce once you secured the Senate seat!"
Julian’s face darkened, a brief flicker of genuine anger crossing his features before he reined it back in. "Those emails pertained to a fictional scenario, and you know it. But even if they were real, it doesn't give you the right to poison my food or endanger our son."
"He's not your son!" Clara shrieked, the words tumbling out of her mouth before she could stop them.
The room went dead silent. Even the air seemed to stop circulating.
Julian stared at her, his eyes narrowing to dangerous slits. "What did you just say?"
Clara froze, her hands flying to her mouth as she realized the catastrophic weight of what she had just confessed in front of the nanny.

Before Julian could demand an answer, a sharp, urgent pounding echoed loudly from the front heavy oak doors of the estate, followed by the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers illuminating the living room windows through the sheer curtains.
