Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Bottle

The words hung in the air like a heavy toxic fog, suffocating every ounce of oxygen left in the study. Clara felt the blood drain entirely from her face, leaving her skin stark white beneath her carefully applied makeup. Her red hair, still pinned in its stiff updo, felt suddenly too tight, pulling painfully at her scalp.
"That's a lie," Clara choked out, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper. She took a half-step backward, her designer heels clicking sharply against the hardwood. "You're insane, Julian. Why would I ever hurt my own child? This is a setup. The opposition must have fabricated this to destroy your campaign!"
Elena gasped softly, clutching the sleeping infant even tighter. The dark green dress and white apron she wore suddenly seemed like a uniform of survival in a house gone completely mad.
"You didn't want the child, Clara," Julian said, his voice eerily calm, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "Not after the polls showed a family-first narrative was the only way I could secure the nomination. You saw the baby as a prop, and when Elena started paying too much attention to his real health needs instead of your scripted photo ops, you decided to eliminate the liability."
"You have no proof that holds up in court!" Clara hissed, her mask of composure shattering completely as desperation took over. She reached out, her fingernails catching the edge of the desk. "If you ruin me, Julian, I swear I'll take down everything you've built. I have the financial ledgers. I know where the dark money came from for the 2020 senate race!"
Julian’s expression hardened further, the skin around his eyes tightening. He didn't flinch at the threat. Instead, a slow, calculated smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"You think you're the only one keeping secrets, my love?" Julian asked smoothly. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a folded piece of heavy parchment paper, sliding it across the desk toward her.
Clara looked down at the paper with trembling fingers. She unfolded it slowly, her eyes scanning the first few lines of the text. As comprehension dawned, her knees buckled slightly, and she had to grab the edge of the desk to keep from collapsing onto the floor.
It was a certified medical report from a private Swiss clinic, dated three days ago, detailing a toxicology screening performed not on the baby, but on Julian himself.
"Arsenic poisoning," Clara whispered in sheer horror, reading the bold diagnosis. "Slow-acting. Administered daily."

Julian leaned in close to her ear, his breath hot and threatening. "And guess whose fingerprints were found on the vitamin bottles in my private master bathroom?"
