Chapter 1 - The First Crack

The sharp heel of the burgundy pantsuit struck the polished oak floorboards with a dull, echoing thud. Clara Vance breathed hard, her chest heaving as she glared down at Elena, the quiet nanny holding the sleeping infant in a tight wrap sling. Behind them, the massive American flag hung stiff and heavy against the dark wood-paneled wall of the estate’s private study, casting a solemn shadow over the escalating domestic dispute. Clara’s red hair, pinned up in a tight, immaculate updo, came slightly loose at the nape of her neck as her rage peaked.
"Don't you dare hold him!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with a toxic mix of fury and paranoid hysteria.
"Ma'am, please calm down," Elena whispered, her dark eyes wide with quiet terror as she instinctively clutched the baby tighter to her chest, her dark hair braided neatly over her shoulders in a green dress and white apron.
"I'm afraid of you right now!" Clara snapped, taking another aggressive step forward, her hands clenched into tight white-knuckled fists.
Before Clara could lunge closer to the terrified nanny, heavy leather-soled shoes echoed sharply down the long hallway. Julian Vance strode into the room, his tall frame cutting an imposing figure in a tailored navy blue suit, a crisp white pocket square, and a sharp red tie that symbolized the immense political weight of his rising campaign. He took in the volatile scene in a single, cold glance.
Stepping swiftly between his frantic wife and the shaken nanny, Julian raised his right hand and struck Clara sharply across the face. The loud crack of skin against skin reverberated through the quiet room, stunning the air into absolute silence.
"Enough!" Julian barked, his voice stern, deep, and dripping with absolute authority.
Clara stumbled back against the heavy mahogany desk, her hand flying up to her stinging cheek. Her eyes widened in sheer disbelief, staring at the man she had shared a bed and a political dynasty with for over a decade.
Julian stepped in close, towering over her, his breathing controlled and his gaze piercingly cold.

"I saw what you did," Julian whispered fiercely, his eyes narrowing as he dropped a small, crumpled silver flash drive onto the desk right beside her trembling hand.
