Chapter 2 - The Flash Drive

The small silver flash drive sat on the polished mahogany desk, gleaming under the brass study lamp like a coiled serpent ready to strike. Clara Vance stared at the little piece of metal, her fingers still gently massaging her stinging left cheek where Julian had struck her just moments ago. The sharp pain of the blow had begun to dull into a hot, throbbing ache, but the shock in her chest was expanding exponentially, threatening to suffocate her.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Clara managed to whisper, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound composed. She kept her posture rigid in her burgundy pantsuit, desperately trying to reclaim the intimidating aura she had held before Julian interrupted.

Julian did not blink. His navy blue suit jacket remained buttoned, his red tie a stark slash of crimson against his white shirt. He leaned his weight onto one hand against the edge of the desk, keeping his face inches from hers.

"You know exactly what it is, Clara," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Security camera footage from the eastern wing. The footage you thought you successfully deleted from the main house server at three o'clock this morning."

Across the room, Elena shifted uncomfortably, the baby in the wrap sling beginning to stir softly against her chest. The nanny cast a cautious glance toward the door, clearly desperate to exit the suffocating atmosphere of marital warfare.

"Stay right where you are, Elena," Julian commanded without turning his head away from his wife. The nanny froze instantly, her dark braids swaying slightly as she lowered her eyes to the floor.

Clara’s mind raced through a thousand frantic possibilities. Had Julian discovered her midnight meeting with the journalist? Had he found out about the offshore account transfer she initiated to pay off the campaign treasurer? She swallowed hard, her throat feeling like sandpaper.

"The server was compromised by an outside hacker last week, Julian," Clara lied smoothly, forcing a look of righteous indignation onto her face. "You know the campaign IT team warned us about cyber threats from the opposition party. You're blaming the wrong person because you're stressed about the upcoming primary."

Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent a shiver straight down Clara's spine. He reached down, picked up the flash drive, and slowly slipped it into his breast pocket, right next to his white pocket square.

"The hacker didn't wear a burgundy pantsuit, Clara," Julian whispered, his eyes flashing with a dark, hidden fury. "And the hacker certainly didn't try to poison the baby's formula to frame the nanny."
