Chapter 8 - The Desperate Lunge

The heavy iron crowbar clattered against the floor, but nobody paid attention to it as Henderson launched himself across the room. His fingers clawed toward the fabric of Maya’s grey hoodie with brutal desperation, intent on ripping the hidden flash drive away before she could activate any secondary measures.
Leo reacted on pure adrenaline. He kicked the heavy metal bar toward the side of Henderson's path, catching the principal’s shin mid-stride. Henderson tripped forward with a sharp grunt, his shoulder slamming hard against the side of Maya's wooden desk, sending pencils and notebooks scattering across the floor in a chaotic clatter.
"Run, Maya!" Leo screamed, planting his weight between the falling principal and the terrified girl.
Maya didn't hesitate. She shoved her chair back, the wooden legs screeching against the floor, and bolted toward the open classroom door. But before she could cross the threshold, Mrs. Vance intercepted her with shocking athletic speed. The teacher grabbed a fistful of Maya's remaining long dark hair, yanking the girl backward so hard Maya gasped in pain, stumbling and falling hard onto her knees.
"You're not going anywhere, you ungrateful little parasite," Mrs. Vance hissed, her face inches from Maya’s, distorted by rage and absolute panic. She reached blindly toward the collar of the hoodie where the USB drive was wedged.
Hayes stood frozen near the chalkboard, paralyzed by the violence unfolding before him. He was a bureaucrat, a man of paper trails and quiet compromises, completely unequipped for the raw, savage desperation of a cover-up unraveling in real time. His phone buzzed in his pocket—another automated alert from the server farm downstairs, indicating that data packets were actively moving through the gateway.
"Eleanor, stop! Look at your phone!" Hayes yelled over the commotion, holding up his screen which was now flashing bright crimson. "The firewall is dropping! She wasn't bluffing about the timer!"
Mrs. Vance froze, her hand hovering just an inch away from Maya's collar. She turned her head slightly to look at Hayes, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"What are you talking about?" she demanded, her grip on Maya's hair loosening just enough for the girl to wrench herself free with a sharp cry of agony.
Maya scrambled backward on her hands and knees, pressing her back against the supply cabinet. She reached into her hoodie, pulled out the black USB drive, and held it up like a talisman, her chest heaving as fresh tears streamed down her flushed cheeks.
"The timer started the moment Principal Henderson locked the door," Maya whispered, a terrifyingly calm smile touching the corners of her lips. "Ten minutes, and every file on every student you've broken down in this basement goes straight to the state police."
Principal Henderson pushed himself up from the floor, ignoring the dull ache in his bruised shin. He stared at the small black device in Maya's hand, his breathing heavy and ragged. Then, slowly, a grim, fatalistic smile spread across his lips as he reached inside his dark jacket and pulled out a heavy, old-fashioned brass key.

"You think the state police are going to help you, girl?" Henderson asked softly, walking toward the corner of the room. "The police commissioner is on our board of directors. Nobody is coming to save you."
