Chapter 12 - The Final Struggle in the Dark

The sudden assault caught Maya off guard. She stumbled backward, her grip slipping from the heavy iron crowbar as she collided hard with Mrs. Vance’s chest. The teacher's fingernails dug viciously into Maya’s arms, trying to pin her against the wall while reaching blindly for the terminal where Leo was desperately hammering the enter key.
"Leo! Don't let her touch the keyboard!" Maya cried out, struggling against the teacher's desperate, vice-like grip.
Leo slammed his hand down onto the master enter key just as the loading bar hit 98%. But before the final confirmation could process, a heavy shadow loomed over the desk. Hayes, driven by a sudden surge of self-preservation and fear, lunged across the wooden surface and yanked the USB drive straight out of the terminal port.
"No! You idiot!" Leo screamed, abandoning the keyboard and tackling Hayes around the waist with all his remaining strength.
The two of them crashed into the wall of filing cabinets, sending heavy metal drawers sliding open with a deafening clatter of scattered papers and folders. Hayes groaned in pain, dropping the flash drive onto the floor as he slid down the metal frame.
Mrs. Vance released Maya, diving desperately toward the floor in the pitch-black darkness to find the fallen device. Her fingers scraped frantically against the linoleum, feeling around among the loose papers until her palm brushed against the small plastic casing of the USB drive. A triumphant laugh escaped her lips as she clutched it tight.
"Got it," Mrs. Vance whispered breathlessly, scrambling to her feet.
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and hummed back to full, blinding intensity. The sudden rush of light forced everyone to squeeze their eyes shut, blinking rapidly against the painful glare.
When the room cleared into sharp focus, the scene looked like a war zone. Papers were scattered everywhere across the floor. Hayes was slumped against the filing cabinets holding his bruised shoulder. Mrs. Vance stood near the supply closet door, panting heavily, clutching the black USB drive in her right hand like a lifeline.
And standing right behind her, stepping out of the subterranean shaft with the heavy brass key in his hand, was Principal Henderson. His expression was no longer panicked; it was cold, calculating, and absolute.
"Give me the drive, Eleanor," Henderson commanded quietly, holding out his open palm.
Mrs. Vance hesitated for a split second, looking at the principal’s cold eyes, then slowly placed the flash drive into his outstretched hand. Henderson turned his gaze toward Maya and Leo, who were standing side by side near the master terminal, bruised, exhausted, but entirely unyielding.

"It's over," Henderson said, lifting the flash drive up to eye level. "You lost."
