Chapter 14 - The Second Drive

Principal Henderson stopped dead in his tracks, the triumphant smile completely vanishing from his face as Maya’s words settled over the room like a physical weight. Mrs. Vance pushed herself away from the doorframe, her eyes darting nervously between Maya and the principal. Hayes stared in stunned silence, his jaw slack as he realized the terrifying depth of what was truly unfolding.
"A decoy," Maya repeated clearly, her voice devoid of any childhood tremor. She slowly slid her hand out of the deep pocket of her grey hoodie. Resting flat across her palm was an identical black USB drive—except this one had a small piece of red electrical tape wrapped neatly around its base. "My brother knew how paranoid you were, Principal Henderson. He knew you kept a localized EMP device wired into the sub-basement grid. He planned for this exact scenario six months ago."
Henderson’s face drained of all color, his skin turning a sickly, ghostly grey under the harsh fluorescent lights. He lunged forward with a desperate, animalistic roar, abandoning all pretense of authority or control, intending to snatch the device directly from her hand.
"Give it to me!" Henderson screamed, his fingers clawing through the air.
Before Henderson could close the distance, Leo shoved the heavy wooden teacher's desk directly into the principal's path. Henderson tripped hard over the desk leg, crashing violently to the floor with a loud grunt, sending a shower of loose papers and pencils flying in every direction.
Hayes didn't hesitate this time. Galvanized by the sudden shift in momentum, the district official rushed forward and slammed his heavy foot down squarely onto Henderson’s wrist, pinning the principal’s hand to the linoleum before he could recover.
"Stay down, Henderson! It's over!" Hayes shouted, panting heavily as he secured the fallen man with surprising strength.
Mrs. Vance backed away in absolute horror, realizing she had nowhere left to run. She turned her heels toward the hallway door, desperate to escape, but the heavy oak barrier suddenly shuddered under a massive, coordinated impact from the outside.
Before anyone could react, the deadbolted door gave way with a deafening crash of splintering wood and sheared metal bolts. The heavy door swung wide open, revealing a row of uniformed state police officers with their badges held high, led by a tall woman in a sharp dark suit.
"State Police! Nobody move!" the lead investigator commanded, her sharp gaze sweeping across the chaotic classroom.

She stepped past the broken threshold, her eyes locking immediately onto Maya holding the red-taped USB drive in her steady hand.
