Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Groan

The heavy click of the remote control triggered an instantaneous response beneath the floorboards. The low, subterranean groan vibrated upward through the soles of their shoes, rattling the windows and shaking dust particles loose from the ceiling tiles. The amber emergency lights flickered violently twice and then died completely, plunging the classroom into absolute, suffocating darkness.

"No! What did you do?" Hayes shouted in panic, stumbling blindly against the wooden desks as he tried to find the wall.

In the pitch-black room, the only point of illumination was the faint, ghostly blue glow of the smartphone screen still clutched in Hayes's hand. The dim light cast eerie, dancing shadows across the faces of the terrified students and the cornered adults. Maya gripped the heavy iron crowbar tightly, her knuckles aching from the cold metal, her eyes darting toward the open supply closet where the shaft descended into the earth.

"Henderson! Turn the power back on!" Mrs. Vance’s voice echoed shrilly from somewhere near the chalkboard, shaking with raw terror. "You locked the primary servers! If the main breaker trips, the encrypted files will corrupt before they finish uploading!"

"Let them corrupt," Henderson’s voice drifted back from the darkness, calm and chillingly detached. A heavy metallic scraping sound indicated he had already stepped backward down the ladder into the subterranean access shaft. "If we can't protect the academy, nobody walks out of here with a clean record."

Leo lunged through the dark toward where he remembered the teacher's desk being, his hands sweeping across the surface until his fingers brushed against the glowing keyboard of the master terminal. He didn't know much about computers, but he remembered seeing the flashing green override icon on the screen moments before the power died.

"Maya! Give me the flash drive! Now!" Leo yelled over the low, rhythmic hum of the failing server racks below.

Maya didn't hesitate. She navigated the dark room by sheer instinct, dodging the scattered chairs until she reached Leo's side. She pressed the small black USB drive into his outstretched palm. Without a second wasted, Leo shoved the device directly into the open port on the side of the teacher's terminal.

The screen flared to life, casting a harsh, blinding white light across Leo's determined face. A loading bar popped up instantly, crawling at a agonizingly slow pace: Uploading Archive: 84%... 85%...

"Hurry up, kid! The backup generator is kicking in!" Hayes screamed from across the room. The sound of heavy mechanical gears grinding overhead signaled that the emergency power was shifting gears, threatening to lock out the terminal entirely once the backup system engaged its security protocols.

Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed Maya by the shoulder from behind, yanking her backward away from the desk with brutal force.

May you like

"You're not going anywhere with those files," a raspy, desperate voice hissed in her ear. It wasn't Henderson; it was Mrs. Vance, who had used the darkness to stalk across the room unseen.
