Chapter 5 - The Missing Brother

The words hung in the stale classroom air like a physical blow. Mrs. Vance’s confident smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a look of genuine panic that she couldn't quite mask. Leo froze midway across the room, his eyes darting between Maya and the two adults. The name mentioned—the missing brother—was a ghost that had haunted the hallways of the academy for the past six months, ever since senior student David Vance, the nephew of the teacher standing right in front of them, vanished without a trace after the science fair.
"Shut your mouth, you little liar," Mrs. Vance hissed, taking a threatening step toward Maya's desk. Her composure was completely shattered now, her voice cracking with suppressed fury. "David graduated and moved out of state. The police closed the investigation weeks ago."
"The police closed it because Mr. Hayes altered the attendance logs to show David checked out early on the day he disappeared," Maya said softly, her dark eyes locking onto the teacher with an unwavering intensity. She slowly reached inside the front pocket of her grey hoodie and pulled out a small, black USB drive, holding it up between her thumb and forefinger. "My brother knew what you were doing in the basement archive, Mrs. Vance. He knew you weren't just cutting hair."
Hayes lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing Maya's wrist before she could pull her hand back.
"Give me that, Maya. Right now," Hayes demanded, his voice desperate as he tried to pry her fingers open. "You have no idea what you're holding. It'll destroy everything—every program, every scholarship, this entire school!"
"Get away from her!" Leo roared, finally closing the distance. He slammed his shoulder directly into Hayes's side, knocking the tall man off balance and forcing him to stumble back against the chalkboard with a loud crash.
Mrs. Vance didn't hesitate. She lunged across the desk, her hands grabbing for the flash drive, but Maya ducked her head and shoved the small device deep inside her collar, pressing it tight against her skin. The teacher's fingernails scraped harshly against Maya's neck, leaving a angry red scratch that immediately began to bead with tiny droplets of blood.
"Give it to me!" Mrs. Vance shrieked, her mask of professional discipline completely gone, revealing the frantic, cornered woman underneath.
Before the struggle could escalate further, the classroom's overhead emergency lights suddenly flickered and died, plunging the room into a dim, amber glow. The external hallway door, which had remained ajar, slowly swung all the way open with a soft, ominous creak.
Standing in the doorway was the school principal, holding a heavy metal crowbar in his right hand, a dark, unreadable expression plastered across his face.

"Lock the doors," the principal said quietly, his voice echoing in the gloom. "Nobody leaves this room tonight."
