Chapter 10 - The Knock on the Door

The rhythmic pounding against the heavy oak classroom door startled everyone in the room. Three sharp, metallic raps followed by a muffled shout reverberated through the hallway, breaking the tense silence of the standoff. Mrs. Vance gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, while Henderson instantly released his grip on Hayes’s jacket.

"Open this door! Security check! Principal Henderson, report your status!" a gruff, unfamiliar male voice boomed from the other side of the wooden barrier.

Hayes let out a sudden, ragged breath of relief, stumbling away from the supply closet entrance. He raised his hand toward the door, ready to call out for help, but Henderson moved with terrifying speed. The principal lunged across the room, his hand clamping forcefully over Hayes’s mouth to silence him before a single word could escape.

"Don't make a sound," Henderson hissed into Hayes's ear, his eyes wild and desperate. He turned his head toward Mrs. Vance. "Get the boy. Throw him into the shaft right now."

Leo didn't wait to be grabbed. As Mrs. Vance lunged toward him, he ducked beneath her outstretched arms and charged straight for the hallway door, slamming his fists against the wood in a desperate bid to answer the security guard.

"Help! In here! We're locked in!" Leo screamed at the top of his lungs.

Mrs. Vance shrieked in fury, lunging forward and tackling Leo around the waist. They both crashed hard against the linoleum floor, a tangle of flailing limbs and angry shouts. Maya scrambled to her feet, abandoning her defensive position by the desk. She grabbed the heavy iron crowbar Henderson had dropped earlier, hoisting the cold metal tool with both hands.

"Get off him!" Maya yelled, her voice echoing with a fierce, unexpected authority.

She swung the heavy end of the crowbar toward the floor right beside Mrs. Vance’s head. The metal struck the linoleum with a deafening crack, shattering a floor tile and showering the struggling pair in sharp plastic and cement dust. Mrs. Vance froze instantly, releasing her grip on Leo and scrambling backward in sheer terror, her eyes wide as saucers.

"Open the door, Maya! Now!" Leo shouted, scrambling up from the floor and rushing toward the deadbolt lock. He reached up, twisting the heavy metal latch, but the automated lockdown mechanism held it firmly in place. It was controlled entirely from the digital terminal on the teacher's desk.

From the hallway, the pounding grew frantic.

"Principal Henderson! I know you're in there! The district override command just flagged this room for unauthorized internal access!" the voice outside yelled. It wasn't a standard security guard; the cadence was sharp, crisp, and undeniably authoritative—sounding suspiciously like an independent district investigator.

Henderson let go of Hayes, realizing the game was completely up. His face drained of all color, leaving him looking like a statue carved from ash. He slowly backed toward the open shaft of the supply closet, his eyes locked on the classroom door as the heavy oak began to splinter under the heavy blows of a fire ax from the hallway.

"You think you won?" Henderson whispered, a manic edge to his voice. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small black remote control with a single red button, and pressed it down firmly.

A low, subterranean groan echoed beneath their feet, followed by total darkness.
