Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Doorway

The heavy silence in the classroom became almost suffocating as the tall man in the dark jacket stepped fully past the threshold. His shoulders were tense, and his eyes darted from the fallen scissors on Maya's desk to the clumps of dark hair scattered across the floor like fallen leaves. Mrs. Vance stumbled back half a step, her fingers nervously twitching against the fabric of her dark blue button-down shirt. The authority she had wielded moments before vanished completely, replaced by a jittery, hunted posture.
"Mr. Hayes," Mrs. Vance stammered, her voice losing its previous icy edge. "You weren't scheduled to inspect the West Wing until Thursday."
"I asked you a question, Eleanor," the man replied, his tone dangerously low. He didn't look at the teacher; his gaze remained fixed on Maya, who was trembling violently inside her grey hoodie. "Why is a student's hair on the floor?"
Leo remained standing by his desk, his chest heaving as he watched the confrontation unfold. He had never seen Mr. Hayes, the school district's compliance officer, look this genuinely rattled. Usually, Hayes was a cold, corporate bureaucrat who ignored student complaints in favor of keeping budget numbers clean. But right now, his hands were balled into tight fists inside his jacket pockets, and his jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"It's a disciplinary measure," Mrs. Vance recovered slightly, raising her chin in a defensive posture. "Maya refused to follow the academy's grooming standards. Article twelve, section four. Cleanliness and conformity."
"Grooming standards do not include physical assault with a pair of crafting scissors," Hayes snapped, taking another measured step into the room. He walked past Mrs. Vance as if she were a ghost and knelt down beside Maya's desk. His eyes softened significantly, though a dark shadow of guilt flickered across his face. "Maya, look at me. Are you physically hurt anywhere else?"
Maya kept her head down, refusing to meet his eyes, but she gave a tiny, almost imperceptible shake of her head. She pulled the sleeves of her grey hoodie down over her trembling knuckles, hiding her hands entirely.
"Don't talk to her, Mr. Hayes," Mrs. Vance warned, her voice rising in panic. "Her file belongs to the board. You have no jurisdiction over internal behavioral corrections."
"Shut up, Eleanor," Hayes whispered without turning around. He reached out slowly, intending to touch Maya's shoulder, but the girl flinched away so hard she nearly tipped her chair over.
Hayes froze, his hand suspended in mid-air. He looked at Maya's trembling form, then slowly raised his gaze to look directly at the whiteboard behind the desk. Written in bold, aggressive marker across the top was a schedule of names, and Maya's name was circled in bright, glaring red ink.

"So it's true," Hayes murmured under his breath, staring at the whiteboard. "You've been tracking them all."
