Chapter 3 - The Red Circle

Mrs. Vance stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she tried to insert herself between Hayes and the young girl. Her face was flushed now, a stark contrast to the pale shock she had exhibited just moments before. She pointed a finger toward the hallway door, attempting to reclaim her classroom through sheer intimidation.
"You are overstepping your boundaries, Hayes," Mrs. Vance hissed, lowering her voice so Leo couldn't catch every word from across the room. "The board authorized these corrective sessions for the scholarship students. If they cannot assimilate into our culture, they must be broken down and rebuilt. You signed the exact same compliance forms we all did."
"I signed off on administrative probation, Eleanor, not public humiliation and forced shearing," Hayes retorted, standing up to his full height. He towered over the teacher, casting a long shadow across her desk. "This isn't behavioral correction. This is straight-up psychological torture. And I know damn well why you're doing it."
Maya let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her arms against the wooden desk. The cut locks of dark hair shifted around her elbows, a tangible reminder of the violation she had just endured. Leo gripped his desk even tighter, his eyes darting between the adults. He didn't understand the full depth of what Hayes was implying, but he knew the red circle on the whiteboard wasn't about grades or tardiness. He had seen that same red circle on three other students' desks before they suddenly transferred out of the school mid-semester without a word.
"You're going to ruin everything we've built," Mrs. Vance said, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper as she grabbed Hayes's forearm. "The foundation funds this entire district. If the parents find out what happens behind these doors when the state inspectors aren't looking, the whole board goes down. Including you."
Hayes looked down at her hand gripping his jacket sleeve, then slowly peeled her fingers away one by one with deliberate coldness.
"Let her go, Eleanor. Pack your things and walk out of this building right now," Hayes commanded, his voice echoing in the silent room. "Or I call the state police and let them look inside the basement archive."
Mrs. Vance went entirely rigid. Her eyes darted toward the corner of the ceiling where a small, blinking security lens stared back at them. A slow, terrifying smile spread across her lips.

"You think I'm the only one with footage stored in the cloud, Hayes?" Mrs. Vance whispered softly. "Check your phone. Right now."
