Chapter 7

The main hallway echoed with the frantic shouts of teachers and students spilling out of classrooms. Every single wall-mounted digital display and classroom monitor across the entire high school had gone completely black, replaced only by a single, pulsing crimson line of text: AUDIT IN PROGRESS. DO NOT TURN OFF TERMINALS.
Maya walked calmly through the chaotic corridor, her hands tucked deep into the pockets of her dark zip-up hoodie. Students rushed past her in a panic, whispering rumors about a catastrophic cyber attack or a hacker syndicate holding the district ransom. Tyler stood near his locker, furiously tapping on his smartphone while his face drained of all color as his banking apps displayed frozen balances and suspended scholarship accounts.
Sarah Chen sprinted up to Maya, panting heavily, clutching her digital voice recorder like a lifeline. "Maya! Did you see the screens? The entire network just locked up! The administration is claiming it's a routine server update, but the IT department is in absolute meltdown. Was this you?"
"Routine updates don't usually shut down the payroll system and freeze the athletic booster club accounts simultaneously, Sarah," Maya replied smoothly, stepping aside to let a panicked Vice Principal Vance run past them toward the server room.
"My sources in the administration are saying someone uploaded a master encryption key directly from a student-registered terminal," Sarah said, lowering her voice and staring intently at Maya behind her glasses. "And the digital footprint points straight to the library's corner workstation. Your workstation."
Maya paused, turning her head to meet the journalist's piercing gaze. "Libraries are public spaces, Sarah. Anyone can sit at a desk. Anyone can plug in a drive if they know the administrative override codes."
"You're not just investigating them, are you?" Sarah whispered, grabbing Maya's sleeve. "You're dismantling the whole system from the inside out. If I write this story, if I publish your name as the architect of this shutdown, it will make headlines across the state. But you'll become Public Enemy Number One."
"Let them look for me," Maya said, her voice dropping to a chillingly flat register. "When the truth comes out, no one will be looking at the hacker. They’ll be looking at the ashes of everything these corrupt men built."

Suddenly, the overhead emergency lights flickered and died, plunging the entire hallway into an eerie, suffocating crimson glow as the backup generators kicked in with a low, groaning hum.
From the far end of the darkened corridor, a tall silhouette stepped out of the shadows, moving with slow, deliberate footsteps. It was Coach Henderson, his face completely obscured by the red emergency lights, holding a heavy metal crowbar in his right hand.
